I didn't slow down until I saw the headlights of the shuttle. It was an even greater relief when I spotted the effervescent wave of a certain zombie's hand.

"There you are! This is the last shuttle out, you know? Nado is a bit of a grump to begin with, having her wait past her scheduled departure is like poking a nuke."

"I can hear you," growled a voice from the front of the bus.

"It's not like I was whispering," said my friend and coworker, Liz, with a shrug. "You're welcome to be a grump, I'm just saying Del should appreciate what I've been through to make sure she gets to go to the wedding. I mean she is my date and all, but..."

"Wait until I tell you what I've been through," I added in a low voice as I gave her a quick hug and then headed up the stairs of the shuttle.

"Ooh, do tell," she replied as she followed up behind me.

Not wanting to delay the displeased zombie driver any further, I grabbed the first free bench I saw and sunk over by the window so Liz could slide in beside me.

"Okay, so spill, why were you cutting it so close? You're never late to work."

"I nearly got eaten by a crazed werewolf," I mumbled as I rested my head against the window.

"Nothing interesting ever happens to me," she sighed. "For once I'd like to be the object of gossip and not the messenger."

I looked at her from the corner of my eye and found a mischievous grin negating her remorseful tone.

"So, that being said," she continued when her prodding only resulted in silence, "are you going to tell me what happened? Because if I can't be the origin story of the newest gossip, I'd like to be the catalyst for the spread."

"The Blood Moon makes wolves unstable apparently," I answered with a shrug. "It was wrong place, wrong time, kind of thing. I just happened to cross paths with the visiting pack while they were..."

"Ooh, the visiting pack did this, excellent." I could practically hear little devil horns sprouting from her head as her fingertips bounced together in a diabolical rhythm.

"No, no, no," I said, popping off the window. "It wasn't the wolf's fault. Like I said, it was just bad timing and their, uh, alpha-to-be, was the one that saved me."

"Is he young and handsome?" asked Liz as she massaged her chin and raised a single eyebrow.

"Does it matter?"

"It does if your current young and handsome alpha has been giving you the cold shoulder."

"He's been busy."

"It's way more interesting if we go with what's in my head."

"Please don't," I sighed, my lips turning with a pout.
