Mitsube slunk amongst the shadows, hoping no one would see her.
A flash of light in the darkest shadow by the hall had caught her eye. The flashes slowly led her out of the hall and into the hallway where the princes' rooms were, along with Xu's office.
Mitsube's mind flashed to the worst. Are the princes safe? Are they dead? I didn't notice them in the hall.
She didn't notice the quiet clanging of metal echoing throughout the hallway. She didn't notice a soft plead for mercy. She didn't notice the nearly silent footsteps walking behind her.
Mitsube passed Xu's office, then stopped.
The door hung ajar.
The archery teacher opened the door and slipped into the room, thinking Xu was open to visitors.
What she saw shook her to the bone.
Xu was dead.
The footsteps grew louder behind her. Mitsube still didn't notice, wrapped up in her grief for the former head. Mitsube had grown up in the Kage Kingdom, but many people said she had the spirit of one from the kingdom southeast of her home: the Kaen Kingdom. Xu, from the Heiwa Kingdom, and accepted her fiery spirit and the two of them had become fast friends.
Her mind slipped to Shu Kurenai, Xu's third cousin twice removed. Contrary to what everybody believed, none of the royal bloodlines were entirely pure. For example, Xu's great-great grandparents had two children, one son, one daughter. The son had remained in the Heiwa Kingdom to preserve the bloodline, while the daughter headed south. The daughter married the heir of the Kaen Kingdom and the Kurenai bloodline continued. Meanwhile, Xander Shakadera and Ruway Sun, Shu's closer cousins, were fourth and fifth cousins of Xu.
How will I tell them? They won't feel any grief. They never knew.
She was startled out of her thoughts by the noise of a knife being slid out of its scabbard. Mitsube whipped around to find a person cloaked in black and hidden by a mask waiting for her.
"Did you kill Xu?" Mitsube choked out.
The killer seemed amused. "Poor Mitsube. You must be buried in your grief. But I can put you out of your misery." The knife slid closer to her throat.
"Please don't," Mitsube pleaded. "I have a daughter and a son here. They know I'm their mother. They'll be devastated. They didn't do anything to you! Please spare me. I promise not to speak of this."
The killer sighed. "Then you shouldn't have come. I'm sorry, Mitsube. I can't allow any witnesses, under oath of silence or not. Perhaps you should avoid screaming to postpone their grief a little longer. It will be quick and painless."
It was quick and painless. The knife sliced right through. I'm sorry, Mitsube thought. She held off the darkness as long as she could.
Time seemed to slow down in her final moments. Her mind swept through her greatest desire: seeing the five beasts of the legend. She wanted to finally see the gods as she rose to heaven. She remembered what her friends used to say about her dream. You'll see the gods when kingdom come, Mitsube, they teased. I will, Mitsube used to retort. I'll go to heaven to see them, not the other way around. Her friends smiled. You always take things too literally.
