Shu was sure Ruway's eyes had turned black. Although his second cousin's irises were a dark blue, they now matched his pupils perfectly, and the sclera was also colored pitch black.

What's happening?

Shu took a deep breath, trying to push down the scream rising out of his throat.

Don't! Don't! Do not scream!

"Are you alright?" Lui whispered. That's the nicest thing he's every said to me. Shu tried to keep his hands from shaking. "We need to attack Ruway," Shu whispered back. "Pass the word."

Ruway didn't seem to notice their whispering. He was utterly silent, watching them with those dark eyes. He seemed to be amused by their frightened efforts to stop him.

Eventually, Valt and Zac got the message. They knew what to do. As soon as the clock struck four, they would attack Ruway.

Lui watched the clock carefully, helped by his night vision. It was also his night vision that helped him notice Ruway's pitch dark eyes way before Shu did, from the moment he first appeared behind Kurtz that night.

Five, four, three, two one... GO!

Lui lunged forward, icicles shooting from his hands to become small knives. Zac held him back. "Don't hurt Ruway," he said sternly. "Just knock him unconscious."

"Ugh. Fine." Dropping the knives, Lui ran straight for Ruway. He lifted his knee and knocked his chin up, sending Ruway into unconsciousness. Carefully, he opened Ruway's closed eyes. They were normal again, the irises dark blue.

Thank goodness for that.

. . .

Ruway blinked. Where is Zac going?

Carefully, he untangled his blankets and followed the Hikari prince.

He didn't remember much after that. Surprise at seeing Zac meet up with the other main princes and Free, then... darkness.

He knew he wasn't asleep. He could hear their voices. He could hear Kurtz. He could wonder why Kurtz was there. He could hear everything: the princes arguing, Lui shouting and scolding and hissing, Kurtz giving in to Lui's strength. But he heard something that puzzled him greatly.

The princes and Kurtz seemed to be answering to someone or speaking to someone. He couldn't hear that someone's answers, but whoever they were seemed to make Lui mad. Sometimes Ruway figured out that they were saying that person's name, but whenever they did, Ruway seemed to fall asleep briefly and he could hear.

Are they talking to me? Ruway wondered. If I can hear them, does it mean they're talking to me? Or am I just hearing them but I can't hear that person?

He spent the next few minutes listening to the conversation between the princes and the mystery person. For about five minutes there was absolute silence, so Ruway wondered whether the mystery person was talking for a long time and he couldn't hear or they were talking about the mystery person or they were not talking at all.

Finally, he heard someone speak. He knew instantly this was the mystery person. He did not recognize this voice, and he had been living in the school for years upon years; he knew every voice and every name. This voice was flat and commanding. It was changed somehow. He knew deep in his gut he should recognize this voice; he knew this voice, but the blackness around him had altered the voice so he would no longer remember it clearly.

"Come out."

Ruway's mind was filled with questions. Weren't the princes with this mystery person? Who was supposed to come out? His questions were soon answered. Barely.
