for one crowded hour
you were the only one in the roomSeptember 15, 2003
|myra dalton|Myra rushed around her dorm, throwing in another pair of jeans into her duffle bag for the three-day trip. Just in case. Her mother and Sierra watched her frantically shove the denim into the tiny space she had left in her bag.
"Are you sure that you packed your charger?" Sierra asked.
"Yes, I think I have everything now."
"Did you pack extra snacks-"
"Ma!" She groaned. "I did."
Her mother pressed her lips into a thin line, and stood from the creaky mattress. She cupped her daughter's face, and kissed her forehead. As always, Myra blushed red and batted her hands away. "You didn't have to come all the way here to see me off. It's not like I'm going to different country."
"It's dangerous! Halat kharab hai [The conditions are bad]."
"Mama, you say that no matter what. I'll be fine."
Her mother sighed, crossing her arms over her chest. Sierra slipped out of the room, giving them much needed privacy.
"I know that Asher has been trying to contact you," Mama folded her hands. "And I want you to know that everything will be fine. We are safe."
"How do you know?"
"I wanted to tell you when you came to visit, but I-I've met someone," she dug through her pocket, and pulled out her flip phone. The words registered slowly.
Mom met someone?
Mama scrolled through the gallery, stopping on an image of her with another man. He seemed older than her, his black hair fading gray and a light stubble on his thin face. They both had a silly grin.
Mom clicked the arrow to the next picture. In this one, she hugged the man from behind. Cake frosting was smeared across his face and he looked at her with adoration.
"That was taken on his birthday last month. He has two kids and they're a handful."
Myra felt her eyes sting with tears, her throat dry. "What... What's his name?"
"Imran."
"And when did you meet? How?"
"He came to the office a few months ago while I was working. I didn't want to tell you because I thought you would worry-"
