In the spirit of lazy Sunday, I had done absolutely nothing today. Well, if you count eating peanut butter cookies, popcorn and cherry coke as I binge watched Friends like a typical teenager nothing. Which I didn't.
Standing up from the bundle of bed sheets and couch cushions, I walked over to the kitchen, making myself a five cheese sandwich and went back to the couch, sitting down and grabbing my phone from under a bundle of sheets.
I had a message from my best friend, Michael. We've been friends since about fourth grade, when some boys made fun of my braids and he defended me. Things changed as we grew up, we stuck together all throughout middle school, but soon we started dating, and even though we agreed never to forget about each other and always be together, things soon got complicated. It's hard, having feelings for him, as I discovered when I was in about 9th grade. Loving my bestfriend is one of the hardest things I've ever felt. Seeing him with other girls, him setting me up with guys, it all hurt.
I opened the message.
Michael: I'm going to your house in about half an hour, I've got a surprise
My phone buzzed again while I was holding it, another message appearing.
Michael: Don't bother asking what it is, you won't get it out of me :P
I sighed, he knew I didn't like surprises but he still did stuff like this. I sent him a quick 'ok' and layed back down, pressing play as I started eating my sandwhich.
By the time a loud knock shook the front door, the episode I had been watching had finished and the sandwhich was long gone, only thing left behind were a couple of crumbles that I hadn't bothered to clean up.
I stood up, taking my time and stretching my limbs. It can't be Michael, since he has the key to our house and obviously has no need to knock on the door.
"Who is it?" I called through the door.
"Your extremely hot stripper, ready to sexually dance on your lap!" I could recognize his voice anywhere, only a bit high pitched and always sounding happy, my best friend's voice called from across the door.
I opened the door, leaning on the frame in what was supposed to be a sexy pose, but ended up as me tripping and almost falling because of the floor mat that said 'welcome' in Spanish.
"Take me now, sexy stripper." I said seductively. Michael chuckled, standing tall in front of me. I took my time to admire him, his purple galaxy hair shone brightly as the Sun shined behind him. He had a light stubble growing, bright red-cherry lips pulled into a grin, pearly whites on full display.
"Are you going to let me in?" He said, rocking back and forth on his feet. It was then that I noticed the big, brown box that he was holding.
"No, I was planning on keeping you out here until you told me what was in that box, but then thought that you would never tell me." I said, slight smirk on my face, stepping aside so he could come in.
"You know me so well, Drew." That was his nickname for me. My real name is Nancy, and he always said that I was exactly like the character Nancy Drew, with never ending questions and solving problems. He walked into the dining room, setting the box on top of the mahogany table.
"What exactly do you have in here, cherry lips?" I chuckled, earning a frustrated 'Hmph' from him; he hated when I called him that. Kids used to tease him about his bright lips in middle school until I screamed that his lips were like that because I was always kissing him. That shut them up for good.
"It's something that you have always wanted, but your mom never bought you." He said, looking with extreme enthusiasm as he examined my face, waiting for some sort of acknowledgement.
"Umm... a purple pony that poops rainbows?" I offered lamely.
"Not even close." He said, my sarcasm not affecting his happiness at all. He proceeded to open the box, my heart skipping a beat, a loud gasp escaping my mouth.
A small, chocolate brown Irish setter looked up from the box, ears perked up. It was probably the cutest puppy I had ever seen.
"Michael!" I half screamed half laughed, turning away from the puppy and turning around, giving him a bone-crushing hug.
"You've always wanted an Irish setter, I saw someone selling it, fully vaccinated and all, and decided to buy it for you!" He smiled.
"Thank you so so so so so so so so much! I will never be able to than you enough. This is the most thoughtful gift anyone has ever given me and I've always wanted a puppy, I've probably said it more than a million times, oh gosh, you're the best, I love you I love you I love you!" I rambled, taking the small puppy from the box, holding it close to my face and giving it small kisses.
I noticed a baby blue collar on the puppy's neck, and I held the dog closer, trying to read what it said. "What is this..." I muttered slowly.
My eyes widened in surprise as I read the bone shaped tag. It read:
'Would you be my girlfriend'
I turned around to Michael, an expectant look on his face.
"So... would you be my girlfriend, Drew?" He said, biting his lip. I lowered the puppy back on the box, facing Michael. I put my arms around his neck, looking from his eyes to his lips, standing on my tip-toes, struggling to reach him. He leaned down, closing the gap between us.
Our lips moved perfectly in sync, my hands grasping his hair, pulling him closer to me as his hands layed on my hips, pressing me against him.
"I would love to be your girlfriend, cherry lips." I gave him the biggest smile humanly possible. He laughed, giving me a small peck.
"So, what are you naming him?" He said. I thought about it for a second, electricity still buzzing across my body from our kiss. I finally figured out what I wanted his name to be.
"Clifford."
