The rest of the time in the courtyard pass by fairly uneventful, and before I knew it, it was already night time again. I was just about to settle into bed when I heard a knock upon my door.
"Who is it?" I asked, directing my attention to the entranceway of the room.
"Why, it is only me, lady (y/n)," the unmistakable voice of Prince Komaeda replied.
I felt my heart pound in my chest, confused and concerned as to why he was visiting me at this hour. Granted, there were no rules against the prince is coming to visit after hours, only rules against us leaving our rooms during night time. I couldn't shake the image of him putting me on the spot during breakfast earlier that day.
Despite my better judgment, I replied. "Come in."
The prince awkwardly stepped into my bedroom, still wearing the same clothing as he did earlier that day. Despite him visiting at a rather impolite time, the white haired boy still gave a bow to me as he entered the room.
I couldn't take my eyes off of him, and it was clear he was unable to take his eyes off of me. The prince wasted no time looking me up and down with his silvery eyes, before his eyes finally met mine.
After a moment of silence that lasted a little too long, I finally spoke up. "Your majesty, why did you come to visit me at this hour?"
The prince's lips quirked up into a smirk, and he let out a small chuckle. "My lady, why are you letting a man like me into your room at this hour?"
I felt my cheeks heat up in response to his words. I looked west from him, unable to look him straight in the eye. This only served to add to his amusement, as he let out another low chuckle.
"My, you are even more of a sight when you are flustered!" The prince exclaimed, seemingly amused by my awkwardness. "Speaking of flustered, I would like for us to discuss what happened earlier in the rose garden, lady (y/n)."
I couldn't help but meet his gaze again, his expression calm and collected. The events from earlier replayed in my mind— the threats still stung as they had before. I imagined the bakery being put out of business, and felt a pang in my chest.
"I-it's nothing, your majesty," I stammered. "I apologize for running away so abruptly."
Prince Nagito's brow furrowed in concern, his mouth curling into a frown. He then spoke, his voice deeper than it was normally. "Lady (y/n), why must you lie to me?"
I bit my lip to avoid letting out a gasp. How was I supposed to respond to that?! "I insist it is alright, your majesty. I did not mean to cause you any concern.."
Before I could continue on, the prince pinned me agains the wall, his face dangerously close to mine. I felt my heart pound in my chest as he took a pale hand and positioned it under my chin, pulling my jaw up so that his eyes met mine.
"Dear (y/n), you and I both know that that simply isn't the case," the prince breathed, his voice lowered down to a raspy whisper. "I can see it in your eyes. I saw that you were with some of the other girls earlier. Tell me what they did to you, so I can take this matter into my own hands."
The prince kept his grasp on my face, awaiting my reply. His eyes traveled down to my lips, and lingered on them way too long. He then brushed one of his fingers against my bottom lip, smooth skin grazing it ever so gently.
"T-they threatened me," I choked, my voice weak and wavering. "They told me that I needed to drop out of the spouse search, or else they would harm the bakery..."
Komaeda's eyes widened in surprise, clearly taken aback by my words. He then let go of me, though my heard was still pounding wildly in my chest. "I cannot believe it. That is entirely unacceptable. My apologies, lady (y/n). Mark my words: it will be taken care of."
I swallowed, feeling the adrenaline course through my veins. What did he mean by 'taken care of'? The words of the other girl replayed in my mind, and I was reminded of how she told me that I was considered to be but a toy to the princes. The image of the prince shamelessly pinning me against the wall moments before replayed in my mind. Was that really the case?
"I... that's not necessary," I replied.
"Trust me, lady (y/n), it is," he insisted bluntly. "I will have it handled and taken care of."
The prince then grabbed ahold of both of my hands, brushing them gently with his fingers. He then lifted one up to his lips and planted a kiss on it, causing my heart to flutter.
Then, still holding my hand close to his face, he spoke, a small smile curling onto his lips. "You are very important to me, lady (y/n). The hope and luck that brought you here have not been lost on me. I couldn't bear to see your hopeful future be jeopardized, no matter what it may be. So for that reason... I will protect you."
Before I could say another word, the prince let go of my hand and walked towards the door. He then gave me a polite bow, his demeanor as if nothing had happened before. "Sweet dreams, (y/n). Rest assured I will have this incident taken care of."
And just like that, he was gone.
I immediately jumped into bed, the images of him pinning me against the wall replaying in my head. What did he mean by saying he was going to 'take care of it'? Graphic images played in my head, and I prayed that he wouldn't do anything too drastic.
I laid down, trying to force myself to sleep. Eventually I did end up falling into a light slumber, but not before his words replayed in my mind yet again.
The hope and luck you have brought here are not lost on me.
So for that reason...
I will protect you.
