The Crash

The loud screaming of my alarm clock filled the room, waking me from my deep sleep. I rolled over to shut it off, it was time for work. I woke up every morning at 5 am to go to work at Grey-Sloan Memorial Hospital, I was chief of Neuro Surgery. I sat up in bed rubbing my eyes, I am not a morning person. I got up and walked to the bathroom but of course Meredith beat me to it, she always hogged the bathroom in the morning. I waited impatiently by the door for about 10 minutes before she finally came out, "Took you long enough" I muttered as she walked past me "Oh shut it" She laughed back. I went into the bathroom brushed my teeth, took a shower, and got dressed. Once I was finished I walked out Maggie was already dressed and ready to go and Meredith was throwing a jacket on to leave, I was always the last one ready. I threw on some shoes and a jacket and walked out to the car with them. Meredith always drove me and Maggie to work, something about saving the planet for her kids. We headed off to the hospital but of course the traffic was terrible. We tried to look and see what was holding up traffic but we couldn't see anything except the cars in front of us. We sat there for about 5 minutes before I decided to get out and see what was happening. I got out of the car and Maggie was telling me to get back in but I kept walking between the cars up the road. I reached the beginning of the traffic and stopped in my tracks, I was not prepared for what I was seeing. There was a car crash, a very bad one. Two cars were upside down right next to each other and one was on it's side. The cars were torn to pieces and people were standing around in crowds. The car on it's side was smoking and everyone was watching. I noticed something moving by the door of one of the cars, I walked closer to get a better look and saw it was an arm. Someone was stuck under the car. I ran back to the car and got Meredith and Maggie, "There was a car crash and someone is stuck under the car, they need our help come on." I said trying to catch my breath. They ran out of the car and we headed back to the cars. I ran up and got on the ground and realized there were two people up front and a kid in the back. The people in front were male and female around their late 20's and the kid was around 9 or 10. The arm I saw moving was the female's because the male was passed out and the kid was screaming. The girl looked up at me, " H-h-help me please." She stuttered. " I am  surgeon I will help you, can I have your name?" I asked. She opened her mouth to talk but nothing came out at first, "I-I-I'm Elena, my husband is Carter, and the girl in the back is our daughter C-C-Cara." She mumbled just loud enough for me to hear it. "Okay Elena don't worry we are going to get you out of here." I said. I sat up and looked at Meredith, " You check on her and see if we can get her out, I'll check on the husband." She got on the ground and started looking around the car to see if anything had impaled Elena. I walked to the other side and got down next to Carter. He had a huge laceration on his head and it was bleeding profusely. I quickly got up, " Hello, does anyone have a first aid kid?" I shouted to the crowd watching us. Multiple people said no and half the people walked to their cars to check, nobody had a first aid kit. I needed to get the bleeding under control. I was trying to think of what to do and then it came to me, I ran and asked Meredith and Maggie for their jackets. They quickly took them off and handed them to me and I took mine off too. I was able to wrap them around his head and put pressure on the wound. He most likely has a brain bleed but I couldn't worry about that right now, I needed to fix his external injuries. Once I finished putting pressure on his head I went to look for more injuries and that's when I noticed, his stomach had a piece of metal sticking right through it. I was shocked he was still alive but I checked his pulse again to make sure. His pulse was fain but it was there, the ambulance needed to get here before it was too late. " How are you doing Elena?" I asked, " It's getting a little harder to breath but I think I'll be okay." She replied. That was definitely not a good sign but I heard faint sirens in the distance. "Amelia, Meredith come here!" Maggie shouted. I stood up and walked to the other side of the car to where Maggie was, " Cara's pulse is fading, I need your help to try and get her out." She whispered. The door on her side was crushed except for the window, we had no idea how we was going to get her out. " Maybe we can try to get her out through the window, it's halfway crushed but it might work." Meredith said after a minute. The window was very small but maybe if we angled her the right way we could wiggle her out. We all looked at each other and gave reassuring look. I took my foot and busted the rest of the glass around the edges of the window so she didn't get anymore hurt then she already was. Maggie reached in to unbuckle the seatbelt and started to pull her out. She pulled her to the edge of the window and then moved her arms against her chest so she could get out. Once Cara was out Maggie noticed there was something in her throat, a piece of metal. It was small but big enough to block her airway causing her to have trouble breathing. Maggie tried moving her head hoping the metal would fall out but it was stuck in her throat. The sirens got louder and louder until they were right behind us. The ambulance was finally here and could take Cara and clear her airway, as for Carter and Elena they were still in the car. Elena was still awake and Meredith asked her a questions every couple minutes to keep her that way. Once the EMT's got out they were able to get Elena out of the car, but they would have to tear it apart to get Carter out. It was dangerous and there was a chance it was too late but they had to try and save him. In helping that family I forgot about the other two cars involved in the accident so I ran over hoping no one was dead. I looked in the other car that was flipped over and didn't see anyone but while looking I felt a tap on my shoulder. I turned around and seen a tall man with dark black hair, he had bruises and cuts all over his body. " My names Malcolm, I saw you looking in this car, it's mine. The crash was caused by that car that's flipped on the side, he ran into me and I crashed into the other car with that family in it. The guy that hit me died on impact people tried saving him but it was too late he had a serve head injury but what killed him was a long piece of metal right into the heart." He said. " Were you the only one in the car or is there someone else?" I asked hoping nobody else was hurt. "Just me" he replied. "Amelia! We need your help!" I heard Meredith yelling. I quickly ran over, " They are going to pry open his door and we need to grab him out as quickly as we can" she said. We both got down on the ground and gave the EMT the go ahead. They started prying the door open and me and Meredith pulled Carter until he was fully out of the car and laying on the ground. The jackets I wrapped him in were completely soaked in blood, he needed to get to the hospital and fast. Another EMT came over with a stretcher and we lifted Carter and got him on the stretcher. Meredith started walking towards the ambulance when I grabbed her hand, "I'll go, he will need rushed into surgery as soon as he gets to the hospital and if I drive the car I won't make it in time." I said. She agreed that she would drive and started heading towards the car. I jumped up in the ambulance and we started driving. We arrived at the hospital in no time and I immediately rushed to get scrubbed in. The surgery was long and the brain bleed was hard to get under control. I was able to stop it but there was a chance he would be in a coma or worse, braindead. He was taken into the ICU after surgery and I hoped he would wake up, he had a wife and kid and they needed him. I was walking to the Café when I saw Arizona. She noticed me and walked up to me "Hey you guys brought in that little girl in the car crash right?" She asked. "Yeah we did, did you work on her?" I replied. Arizona was chief of fetal surgery but she was with peds for the longest time. "Yeah I did. Alex couldn't make it in today so they called me. I had to go into surgery to get the metal out, it was really stuck in there but surgery was a success. She should be waking up soon." I was so glad to hear she was okay. I had no idea who worked on Elena but I'll figure it out later. "That's good. I was worried she wasn't going to make it." I responded. "She made it just in time, you did good Amelia." She said. I know right now wasn't the best time but her words were like music to my ears. I've had these strange feelings about Arizona for a while but I never focused too much on them. She was my colleague and friend, I can't imagine her being anything else. Whenever she talked to me it was like an angel was coming down from heaven and talking to me. She could keep a conversation going for hours and never get bored. She was always so kind and welcoming to everyone she met. She always did her best to see the good in people and I admired that about her. Not to mention she was absolutely beautiful, gorgeous blonde hair. She's always been this super fun person and being around her just made me happy. These feelings I have for her expanded into more then just being close friends, I've started wondering about a relationship. It's crazy because I don't date women, I never have. I have nothing against the LGBTQ I just never thought I'd ever question my sexuality. I always had bigger and better things to worry about them sexuality and relationships but something is different when I'm with Arizona. She just recently got a divorce with her ex wife Callie so I know it would be inappropriate for me to talk to her about these feelings right now. Maybe some day I'll talk to her about them but I don't know, I don't want to ruin the friendship we have.  I felt a tap on my shoulder and turned around to see Maggie standing there, " Elena woke up from surgery, she did great and everything was successful. I stopped by Carter's room and he still hasn't woken up. It's not looking super great right now but I hope he will wake up." She said. I thanked her for the update, it was only 10 am and the day had a very eventful start.
