It was nearing dusk and I pulled the grey curtains of my room shut until no light from outside could enter. It's been raining cats and dogs since dawn and I offered for Abhishek to stay till the weekend, not that it seemed like he had any real plans of leaving.
I sit back down on the couch from where I had just gotten up a few moments ago. I pace around the room for a while and stare back at Abhishek who's just sitting on the bed, stroking the sleeping Ishika's head and staring at me.
"Will you stop that"
"Stop what" came his clueless voice and I just rolled my eyes.
"Stop staring at me! I'm not that interesting"
"We can both agree on that" and he gets up, leaving the Ishika girl asleep on the bed, "you want tea?" he offers
"No. I don't like tea"
"What! How can you not like tea" he says utterly shocked, "coffee?"
"No. I'm good." I say sternly and he just shrugs and wanders off into the walk in closet.
I stare at the bumps on the wall fantasizing about all the horrible things I would have to do for tomorrow's mission.
Including training this hopeless excuse of a girl.
I walk over to her and sit next to her, examining her.
She's fairly good looking, brown hair, dark eyes. Her eyes have dark circles around them and one eye has a purple ring as though she's been hit several times. Her neck has a good bruise like the ones you get when you've been chained and held by your neck.
Luckily, I knew the remedies. I walk over to the small drawer on the edge of the room and take out a small tube of medicine.
I hunch next to her and move a strand of hair from her face. I'm about to dab a bit of the ointment gently on her eye when a tensed voice stops me.
"Hey! What're you doing!" It's obviously Abhishek.
"I'm applying medicine. What else do you think I'm doing!"
He doesn't reply."I'm not gonna hurt her." I say sincerely.
"I can never be too sure. After All, you're a murderer." those last words sound so sure that they actually hurt to hear. It's not like they're not the absolute precise truth, but it hurts every time.
I sigh and just apply the medicine on her eyes and she flinches slightly.
She has awoken. She holds my hand and sits up on the bed.
"Shall I get you something?" Asks Abhishek.
"Uh, no. Hey could you leave us for a while. Alone. I just wanna talk." Says the girl to him, clearly to his dissatisfaction.
"But she-"
"I insist." Said Ishika, "please"
Abhishek nods and leaves the room. What does this girl want from me?
"Could he be alive, my brother?" she says in perhaps the most fragile voice possible by a human.
"Did they take him?" I ask, absolutely unaffected by her attire.
She nods slowly. "Then he's dead." I say sternly, as though the words mean nothing.
Tears roll down her cheeks and I just give her a stern glare.
"How can you be so ruthless!" She shouts through sobs, then picks up a pillow and starts hitting me with it.
Poor pillow.
