Blair Hayes graduated with top marks in biology and biochemical studies, getting her Master's and advancing fast through the though word of the female scientists. One wrong and a bad timing to get drunk at a bar has gotten her pregnant.
There have been complications along the way, but she decided to keep the child, even if the father has been, in the meantime, convicted, and wanted nothing to do with them. Ryan Hayes was born healthy when his mother was still on the benches of University.
The mutant revolution was hardly loud enough in its beginnings and nothing could have warned the young mother of the struggles she'd face when her son has shows afflictions she scientifically could not explain.
She could not understand what caused him pain and since hospitals failed to give her an answer, she constructed a home laboratory and put on pause her in depth studies.
"No visible injuries can be detected," Blair spoke into the recorder, looking over the scans of her son. He was across the room from her and the whiteboard, seated in his chair, playing with his favorite toy, a small hippo.
She stuck the scans to the whiteboard, amongst algebra and formulas that she tried to check as she went over the results.
"It will fall over," Ryan mumbled, as if he was speaking to the hippo toy.
"What will fall over, darling?" Blair turned around, attempting to face her son, while unfortunately, her entire attention was on her papers and thin portfolio. Her foot caught the leg of the whiteboard and the entire thing fell over, almost hitting her in the way.
Realization was visible in Blair's eyes. She quickly, rather startled too, walked over to her son and lowered on her knees, to be at his eye level. Her hand gently went under his chin to make him look at her, "How did you know that will happen?"
Ryan shrugged, shyly tugging on his hippo.
But now Blair had a hunch so she switched her approach and instead of studying her son's body for a hidden source of pain, she focused on his brain and what kind of chemicals. She was on the verge of accepting the possibility of a mental illness when a test threw her off course with its results.
"Ryan, baby, I need you to write down the colors that I will put on screen, before I put them on, alright?"
The child nodded hesitantly, "And afterwards we can go out in the park, right? I want to see-"
"Sure, dear, just pay attention now and write down the colors," Blair interrupted him to fix the camera and the screen to her monitor that was not facing him. The boy started scribbling down the letters of words.
"Are you done?" she asked again once her random color generator was positioned.
"Done," Ryan smiled and showed her the piece of paper with six colors, written one under the other: red, yellow, green, yellow, purple, orange.
"You can't just list all colors," Blair shook her head, chuckling along amused. She knew this idea was silly and that he couldn't possibly see the future. But for the sake of research, she pressed the generator.
"Red," Ryan pointed out happily.
Blair's expression changed again to mild shock. She pressed the generator again and again and again, each time, the colors following the pattern Ryan gave her. At last, as it stopped at organe, she dropped the remote and covered her mouth in absolute happiness.
She rushed over to Ryan and cupped his face, kissing the top of his head. She had no idea why the random pains occured in his body, but seeing him this capable and unique, somehow brought her joy and pride.
