An Inconvenient Attachment

Chapter 3

The dreams returned every night and with every passing night Leland learned more and more about the lore involved with Grim Reapers. He found out that while Grim Reapers and Witches were tasked with different ends of the same job the way their families were run were nearly polar opposites. The Grim Reapers were comprised of one central family, the Snyders that were in charge of tasking logging and maintaining a list of every family member, their soulmate and the location or territory as they called it they were living and working in. While Witches were in charge of logging all that information themselves and reporting it to the family head. Both species were able to heal upon touching things that were considered holy or sacred in any religion whether they be water, cows, places of worship or stand upon holy land. This allowed for them to never die from illnesses unless willing. As Leland learned more and more the harder it was to convince himself that Witches and Grim Reapers didn't exist and the dreams weren't telling him something. Meira had started to become more than just a character in his dreams the more time Leland spent with her the more she started to feel like a person like an actual human being outside of his dreams.

"Leland pay attention!" Meira called out, "These are important details you'll need soon" He turned to her. It was phrases like that, that made it seem like the dreams were something more.

"Now the last topic I need to teach you about is soulmates"

"Soulmates? Really?"

"I'm almost done I swear. Soulmates don't have to be romantic however that's the most common type. They can be best friends too but the most important thing about soulmates is that they counterbalance all the pain and trauma associated with guiding souls. They allow for distraction and bring joy. They're a reason to live amongst all the death. Once a Grim Reaper or Witch has met their soulmate they gain a new ability either; telepathy, teleportation, or time manipulation all of them are meant to aid in seeing their soulmate. Soulmates also gain a power, I've mentioned before, that Holy Creatures can heal from touching holy objects well soulmates can heal from physical wounds in the same manner along with physical contact from their Reaper or Witch."

"Do you have a soulmate?" Leland asked but before Meira could open her mouth to respond his eyes shot open and he was awake.
