How we met

Kenma and I have been friends for the longest time. We lived close to each other and even went to the same middle school. I remember being very intrigued by this shy guy, always in a corner of a room. He never really spoke to anybody but I was just... so intrigued. From time to time, I could feel his eyes on me. On my tall legs, my muscular back, and my crazy hair. He was more of the short type.

He was not like the people I used to hang around. His video game always in hand, I didn't really think much of him. Kenma was way too much of an introvert for me to really care about him, not to be rude or anything. I had tons of friends. I was on the volleyball team. I was one to be admired.

One day, as I was heading to practice, I spotted the young boy staring through one of the windows of our gym. I immediately walked up to him.

"Kuroo!"

I run toward the ball and slam it onto the floor on the other side of the net. Haruki Komi, Fukurodani's talented libero, somehow retrieved it. Bokuto gives me a sly look before starting to run toward the net. "Oh no, not today, Owl Head," I think to myself before jumping, my hands completely extended, Lev by my sides.

I walked up to the boy who, at the time was a brunet, and stood in silence beside him. He glanced at me but soon reported his gaze onto the team as a loud noise came from inside. The ball being slammed onto the floor. To this day, that is still the best sound.

"Aren't you gonna go practice with your team?" murmured the small boy.

I was almost shocked to hear his voice. Was it the first time he spoke at all?

"What brings you here?" I asked, completely dismissing his question.

The golden eyes boy looked at me as if he had seen a ghost. What, am I that scary?

"I'm just..."

The guy flinched when another loud sound came from inside. Another ball. I was used to all of this loud noise but he wasn't. And at that specific moment, all I wanted to do was to include him, show him that those sounds were the sounds of victory.

The guy was not athletic at all, I even doubted he could run a mile. I knew he was not the type to play sports, or even enjoy them. But he struck me as an interesting person and on that day, I made it my personal mission to get him on my team.

"Kuroo, you don't seem very focused on the game."

In the corner of my eye, I could see Kenma look down too. He has nothing to be embarrassed about. What happened happened. All we can do from now is go forward. I smile at coach Nekomata and try to assure him that I was just hungry. I cannot be subbed out, not on a match against my bro.

No, I am not talking about Kenma here.

"You should think about getting into the volleyball team," I told Kenma one day,  after my practice. "I'm sure you would like it!"

Kenma and I were coming back home from school together. I didn't really know how it all started. It just kind of happened. The brown-haired guy, his eyes still on his video game, made a weird sound.

"Kuroo, I hate running."

"But you'll get used to it."

"Sports are not my thing."

"But you've been watching all of my practices lately! You HAVE to somehow like volleyball, or else you wouldn't have stayed"

"I don't."

"But we could spend so much more time together!"

Kenma lifted his head a little bit to watch me. His eyes had left his video game and he opened his mouth. I saw the confusion in his eyes but I didn't make a big deal out of it.
