The guys took turns driving so we wouldn’t have to stop as often. The scenery was exactly like that I had seen in my dream and it shocked me. After a few hours, I realized that we were getting close to the mom and pop diner from my dream. Looking over at the driver seat, I saw John behind the wheel. “There’s a small diner up ahead about a mile and half on the right. I hear they have some pretty good food. And by the sounds coming from the backseat, we should have stopped hours ago.”
John laughed, but stopped when the others popped him on the back of the head. It didn’t take long before John pulled into the parking lot and we were all hopping out. We were all laughing when we walked in the diner. The waitress started leading us towards the middle of the room before I tapped her on the shoulder. “We’d like a table in the back of the room next to the wall, please.” I smile at her but she just sighs as she turns and walks to another table.
We quickly sat down and I quickly glance at the menu. “We’d like five of the day specials and five waters please.” The waitress just nodded and walked towards the kitchen. The guys looked at me. “You know Ella, we can order for ourselves. Maybe we’d want something else.”
“Sorry guys. I’m sure the four of you wouldn’t want to eat steak, loaded bake potatoes with hot, fluffy rolls. I mean, who’d want a nice, thick, juicy steak?” I keep my face straight as I watch them look shocked. “What? No, no. Steak’s fine with us.” I just laugh softly and smile at them. For the next hour we sat there eating, laughing and talking. As much as I wished that we could sit there all day, I knew that we didn’t have much time to spare.
Soon, we found ourselves back on the road. I leaned my head against the window and closed my eyes pretending to sleep. After several minutes, I heard the guys speaking softly. “Hey Tech, what do you think is eating the Colonel, I mean Ace?”
“I’m not sure Flint, but whatever it is, you know that she’ll tell us when she’s ready.”
“I wish she’d hurry up man, I’m getting a little worried. She just keeps bottling everything up inside her.”
“I know Powder. I worry about her to. What I would like to know is how she knew about our next mission. We just learnt about it ourselves when she was in surgery. There’s no way she could have found out.”
“And we agreed to drive up to Montana to meet her family.” I heard John chuckle softly. “We would jump off the top of the top of the highest building in the world after her.”
“Yes we would.” The other three chimed in. I felt bad about keeping what I knew was coming from the guys. I knew that I would have to tell them before they left. Especially Luke. Slowly opening my right eye, I glance out the window. We passed a small sign that read “Dixon 20 miles”. The jeep was silent for a few minutes before John spoke again.
“When did you get the nerve to finally ask Ella to marry you Luke? I mean, you’ve been in love with her since the first time you laid eyes on her.”
“Just after her surgery: it finally dawned on me that I almost lost her. So, I asked my mom for the ring that she promised would one day belong to the woman I loved and wanted to marry. After I told my parents all about her, my mom gave me the ring and I asked her. I thought she wouldn’t say yes, but she did.”
“Dude, everyone but you knew that she was in love with you as well.” I hid a smile as I closed my eye. “So, who’s going to be best man at the wedding?”
“Um, well you see… We’re not sure who to ask. We’d like to ask all three of you to be best man, but since we can’t, we’re still debating it.” The guys quite talking and the jeep was filled with a comfortable silence for the next fifteen miles. I felt someone gently shake my shoulder. “Ella, we’re almost to Dixon, wake up.” I blinked my eyes several times before sitting up. “Thanks Sam.” I watched as we drove through town.
Looking at the clock on the dash I saw that it was just five minutes after seven. “My parents are probably getting ready for bed right about now. Why don’t we stop at Sandy’s Bed and Breakfast for the night? Then in the morning, we’ll drive out to the house.”
“That sounds like a plan Ace.”
“I know. And I bet the four of you are dog tired.” I gave them directions and before I knew it, Jason was parking beside the small B and B. Opening my door, I slide from the jeep and turned to face the guys. “I’ll go get us some rooms while y’all unpack the bags.” Walking into the building, I looked around slowly. I spotted Sandy behind the desk and I made my way towards her.
“I’d like five rooms please.” I say as she looks up. Her eyes widen just a little as she took in my left arm. “H-how long would you like them?”
“Just for the night ma’am. We’ll be leaving come first light.” Filling out the sign in log, I reach for the keys as Jason, Sam, John and Luke walk in with our bags. “The rooms are on the second floor, numbers 5, 6, 7, 8 and 9. I hope your stay is comfortable.”
“I’m sure it will be Sandy.” Nodding to the guys, I lead the way up the stairs. The first room went to Sam, the second to Jason, then to John. Room number 8 was mine and 9 was Luke’s. I stand in the hallway until each of them step into their room and shut the door. Unlocking my door, I swing it open before grabbing my bag and entering the small room. Locking the door behind me, I slide a small dresser in front of it.
Pulling a pair of black shorts and a tan tank top from my bag, I strip and step into the shower. As the scolding hot water rushed over my body, I let out a sigh of contentment. Once the water started to turn cold, I shut the shower off and step out.
Wrapping a towel around my body, I dry off slowly. Checking the still healing scar on my arm, I slip into my clothes and make my way to my bed. Before I crawl under the sheets, I pull my necklace off and placed it in my duffle bag as a precaution. It would kill me if I lost that. Finally my head hit the pillow and I was out like a light.
