I stayed in my room for hours; letting the guys have their space. It suddenly hit me that Henry was in town as well, and I needed someone to talk too. Pulling out my phone, I text Luke and let him know that I was going for a walk. The house was silent as I made my way out of the door.
As I slowly walked towards the stoplight, I saw several people I knew in school. But I could tell that they didn’t recognize me. Once I reached the light, I turned right and stayed on the sidewalk. I was halfway to Henry’s house when Luke texted me back. When will you be back?
An hour or so, I’m going to see an old friend.
I love you Ella.
I love you too Luke. I look up and see that several vehicles were parked outside of his house. Walking up to the front door, I knocked several times. The door opens and I nod at the man. His face looked familiar and I realize he was Hopper. I smile at him. “I’m here to see Spade.”
“Who should I say is calling?”
“Ace.” The second the word slips out of my mouth, Hopper’s eyes get as wide as saucers. He stepped backwards and held the door wider. “Won’t you come in Colonel while I go get him?” I step into the house. “And Hopper, it’s just Ace now.” I speak lowly and motion towards my arm.
“Yes ma’am Col…Ace. I’ll be right back.” Hopper raced through the house like his pants were on fire. Chuckling softly to myself, I look around and notice that Henry’s whole team was here. Hopper must have told several of them who I was because I kept catching them staring at me.
It didn’t take him long to find Henry and bring him to where I was standing. “Here he is Col…Ace.”
“Thanks Hopper.” I say smiling at him. He smiles back and looks at Henry. Who, by the way, was looking like a deer in the headlights. “You wanted to see me Colonel?”
“It’s just Ace now Spade. I thought I saw you a couple of days ago, and I’ve been racking my brain as to where I knew you from. It finally dawned on me that my team pulled yours out of a nasty situation a while back. I was just a Captain back then.”
“You’re one of the Seals that saved our hides.”
“That would be true.” I spent the next thirty catching up with them. By the time I left, it was getting a little dark. When I reached the red light, I called Luke. “Ella, where are you?”
“I’m almost home. I was thinking, we should ask Jake to be our best man.”
“Whatever you want is fine with me babe. You know that.” I sigh softly before turning towards the house. “I’m sorry that I didn’t tell you guys sooner.”
“Why didn’t you Ella?”
“I don’t know Luke. Maybe it was my own little way of trying to keep everything little bad thing I saw in that dream from coming true.”
“Like what?” He asked and I felt my heart speed up as the vivid details came flashing through my mind. “Well for one thing, the way that you die and then me. But when the four of you confirmed the part about the next mission, I knew that no matter what I did, it would find a way of happening.”
He sighs softly and I could hear the others talking softly in the back ground. “I have a feeling that what you told us was only the tip of the iceberg.”
“Correct. But the rest isn’t something I want to tell right now. Especially over an unsecured line.” I stop walking and look around me. A heavy feeling of being watched washed over me and I started to look around, though at first I didn’t see anything out of the ordinary. It wasn’t until a saw a bird fly out of a tree where it had just landed that my eyes zoomed in on the outline of a gun.
My nerves were like steel, though my mind wasn’t. A thousand different thoughts ran through. Stepping out of his line of sight quickly, I speak softly. “Listen Luke, if I’m not back in ten minutes come looking for me. Be careful though, there are some scopes out.” I hang up before he could say anything. I didn’t know how many there were and where they were positioned.
Mom’s house wasn’t that far from where I was. I could make it there in five minutes, but that was without the sniper that was waiting for me to make a mistake. My eyes light up when I see a small alley in front of me that was hidden from his view. Hurrying down it, I find that it leads to the small strand of trees that stop just outside of my house.
Slipping into the darkness of the forest, I begin to slowly make my way in the direction of home. I guessed I was halfway there when my phone rang. I muttered a few colorfully words under my breath for forgetting to silence it. Dropping to the ground, I roll several times to the left. Pulling the phone from my pocket, I quickly turn the sound off. A bullet hit the tree that I had just been standing by.
Deciding to play with the sniper for a bit, I let out a wounded cry and waited. A very faint rustling reached my ears and I knew that whoever shot at me believed that they had found their mark. Keeping low to the ground, I hurried away from my position. It was several minutes later when I saw the back porch lights on and I let a sigh of relief out.
Two of the guys were standing in the back yard, and I could tell that they were tense. The air was still and I could hear their voices. “I know she told you ten minutes Luke, but if she doesn’t call you back, or walks through that door in the next two minutes, I’m going after her.”
“Will you calm down Sam? It’s only been four minutes. Besides, when have you known Ella of not being able to handle her own?”
“I could have sworn I heard a gunshot just a minute or two ago.” Jason spoke up and I almost smiled. “Don’t you even start that man.” Luke spoke. I suddenly felt something warm seeping down my shoulder. Sliding my hand under my shirt, I pull it out. In the dim light, I could see that it was blood. The bullet must have ricocheted off the tree and either hit my shoulder or grazed it.
I couldn’t let my parents see it, but I had to get in the house. Tugging my phone from my pocket, I call John. “Ella, where in the world are you? This isn’t funny man.”
“Listen John, I need one or two of you to distract my parents while the others gather some gauze, a sewing needle, thread, peroxide, and tape.”
“What happened?” The worry in his voice caught the attention of the others. “I’ll explain later, just do what I asked, please.” I hang up and watch them. John quickly relays my orders to the others and they nod. Jason, John and Sam head into the house while Luke stays outside. “Luke.” I call out softly knowing that he heard me.
“Where are you Ella?”
“Over here.” He quickly hurries towards me, almost running me over in the dark. “What happened?” Concern laced his voice as he helps me up. “I may have left a little bit of information out of what I told you earlier. But I guess you could say that they’re working on collecting that bounty.”
“Let’s get you into the house and cleaned up.”
“My room Luke.” He nods and we silently enter the house. It wasn’t long before Sam rushed into my room carrying the things I asked for. I hold the needle out to Luke. “Sterilize it.” I say as I slowly peel my shirt off, the wet blood acting like glue between the wound and the shirt. Biting my lip to keep from crying out, I quickly wipe the blood away.
Taking the bottle of peroxide, I lean over the side of the tub and begin to pour it on the wound. It started to burn instantly, and I felt like screaming until I was hoarse. Once I thoroughly cleaned my wound, I take the needle from Luke and had him run the thread through it. He then handed it to Sam who began to stitch me up. After he was finished, he laid several pieces of gauze over the area and taped it down. I knew that they wanted to know what happened, but I needed sleep. With a promise to tell them first thing in the morning, they left and I crawled into bed.
