It took us the whole week to get ready for the wedding. Mom didn't agree at first, but after we her that the guys would have to go back a little sooner, she agreed to it. I couldn't help but notice the glances she would send my way when she thought I wasn't looking.
The ceremony wasn't anything like what we had planned, but it was special. Everyone that we cared about, with the exception of Luke's parents, were there. Jason was currently putting our bags into the back of the jeep while Luke, John, and I were on our way back from the cabin with the guns that Carlos delivered.
Before we left the house, I made sure to hug my family and tell them I loved them. I had no idea just what was waiting us in D.C. at Caine's house, but I had to be prepared for everything. I climbed into the back of the jeep and sat beside John. Luke had the first driving shift and I needed to talk with John.
"Listen John. I need you to make me a promise."
"What's up Ella?" I glance at Luke. "If this goes down the drain, and I bite the bullet...I'd like to be cremated and my ashes buried at the base and here at home." He looks at me. "Why are you telling me this?"
"Knowing Luke, he'd throw himself in front of the bullet to keep me from dying. And you know that each of us would do the same for the other. I want it done that way so I'll always be near the ones I hold the closest to me." John smiles but I could tell he understood. "I promise Ella."
Nodding at him, I lay my head on the window and watched as the landscape flew past us. We made D.C. in good time. And before I knew it, we were setting up a stake out by Caine's house. Jason and Sam had the first shift while the rest of us made sure that the weapons and everything was ready to go.
I had just finished putting the silencers on the pistols when Luke sat down beside me. I could tell that something was eating away at him, so I stayed quiet. He picked up one of the guns from the crate and started to load it. "I don't want you to come with us when we strike Caine's house Ella. But I know you and I know that you would go anyway.
"So, I guess what I'm getting at is that I'd like for you to stay behind us; let us protect you this once. Please." He looks at me and I looked into his eyes. He was begging me to hide behind them, but as much as I wanted to for him, that wasn't who I was.
"Luke, as much as I love the thought that you want me safe, you know that I'm not going to stand back and let one of the guys possible get hurt because of me. We will do what we did best; work as a team. And that means we will protect each other as a team." He sighs and shakes his head. "I knew that you would say that."
I just chuckle and finish the gun I was working on. "I think we have enough here for when we attack." Rubbing my face, I wished that life had turned out different for us. The comm beeped and I open the link. "Ella, we're on our way back. He'll be alone tonight for two hours. That's our window."
"Good job Jason. We'll suit up and get ready. We can't afford to mess up on this. I should be doing it alone. If the General found out that y'all helped me assinate another General, he would discharge each of you and throw you in a cell and toss the key down a drain."
"We won't mess up. They'll think it was just a B&E that went wrong we we're finished." THe link drops and I lay the pistol in the bag. "They're on the way back. We're hitting him tonight. It's time to suit up." I hollar as I stand and head to my little area of the room.
