My mother would come home late at night after work, stressed and tired. She worked at a company that handled money, she said.
"It's called a bank," she told me, "And it keeps the money safe. People can't steal it if it's in the bank."
I thought it was the coolest job in the world. She could keep people's riches safe, their whole fortune! She was like...a superhero! Yeah, she kept the money safe from the bad guys, and if they try to steal it, she can call the cops on them! So awesome, right? Not for long.
A pair of brothers tried to rob the bank my eomma worked at, and she called the police. The police came in a minute or two, and shot one of them fatally, while the other one got away. In his eyes, it was my eomma's fault. So when she left work to come home, he followed her.
She knew he was following her, so as soon as she got home, she handed Bitna to me and told me to hide in the closet, and not to come out no matter what. Being the obedient little thing I was, I did as I was told and watched throug the keyhole.
I watched the man break down the door. I watched her try to plead with him, but the grief stricken man wanted to see her bleed. She turned and tried to climb the ladder to the roof so I wouldn't see what was happening, but she didn't make it. She had one foot on the ladder when he stabbed her in the back, right through the heart. After the man left, I put my sister on the bed and ran to her.
"Eomma...get up. Get up! We have to get you to a hospital!"
She didn't get up.
"Hurry, you're hurt, you need help!"
She didn't answer.
"Eomma, come on...please wake up."
When she still made no sound, I pressed my hand to her face. It was...cold. I tried to feel a pulse in her neck, but there was none. I held my ear above her mouth, desperately listening for breathing, but all was silent in the trailer.
I sobbed, hugging the body of the dead woman.
