My mother was dead.
I laid down next to her, holding her cold, stiff hand, only getting up occasionally to feed Bitna when she started to cry. I hugged her still body, getting her insides all over me. After a few hours, the blood was dry and a stench filled the trailer.
I decided I would make her pretty, so she could look nice when she went to meet the angels.
I ran my fingers through her hair, untangling the black strands. I took off her bloody dress, but left her undershirt so God would know to take extra special care of her. I scraped up the dry blood as best I could, and carefully slipped another dress over her head. Getting her arms through the sleeves was hard, but after a few minutes, I succeeded. I slumped on the ground, and wrapped my arms around her once more.
Just after nightfall, a woman came to the trailer and banged open the door. She looked like my mother, but with black eyes and short hair. She smelled like smoke, and had yellow teeth and sickly looking skin.
"Come here Koji. Carry your sister and come with Auntie, I'll be taking care of you." She had a scratchy voice, and spoke harshly, like I'd done something wrong. I hesitantly got up, and followed her outside. "Stay here," she commanded while retriving a jug of something. She went back in the trailer and dumped the contents on my mother. I watched, frozen, as she struck a match and dropped it on my mother, who burst into flames.
The lady put her hand on my shoulder and turned me around, leading me away as my mother turned to ashes.
