2 years and 6 months ago...

Leaning his head on his palm, Dipper reread the same line again. He had been at it so long, the words began to blur together. When he caught himself about to yawn, he idly attempted to stop it. He'd spent the past several months locked up in his room, pouring over his father's journal, searching for any clues to fix the portal. The boy had stayed up countless nights, but he kept telling himself it would be worth it. But despite how many times he said it, the less and less it seemed real.

And it didn't help that half of the journal was written in code. Dipper thought that Ford had been open and honest about everything, but that idea began to crumble after the portal, and now a secret code Dipper had no clue as to how to decipher. The lies seemed to never end.

There was a knock at the bedroom door, and he shook himself awake. "Hey, kiddo, you missed dinner... again." Dipper rolled his eyes. Stan. "So I'm gonna set a plate by the door for you." After some footsteps, Dipper assumed his uncle had left. Stan had repeated this almost every single day, and each time would just remind Dipper why he hadn't slept in forever.

He turned back to the book, squinting at the words. He let out a sigh at the code. "Gosh, it looks like someone just smashed a keyboard!" He groaned and smacked his head down on the desk. "It's all worth it," he mumbled. As he lay there, a small voice crept into his head. What if he's not their when you get the portal open? He pushed the thought away. Ford would be there.

"Howdy, Pine Tree!"

Dipper yelped and shot up, falling out of his chair. He groaned, rubbing his side. "I fell asleep again, didn't I?" He frowned, staring up at Bill, who floated by the chair.

"How else would I be here?" Bill turned brighter with each syllable. Sometimes that seemingly always cheery voice got under Dipper's skin.

He sighed angrily and ran a hand through his hair. "I- I can't figure out that stupid journal!" he shouted. "This shouldn't be this difficult!" He pulled himself up to his feet with the desk.

"Yeah, I thought you would've figured it out by now," Bill said, hovering over the book.

"It takes like, seven steps to figure out ONE sentence! I just want to figure out how to open that portal!"

"You sound stressed, Pine Tree."

"Yes, I am!" Dipper sat back down at the chair, holding his head in both hands. "I'm so exhausted." He was so tired, even his dream self felt tired. He just wanted to feel his father's warm touch again. He had to fix this.

"If only there were some way I could help..." Bill leaned on his cane in the air and with his other hand stroked his chin thoughtfully. Dipper glanced up at him, wondering what the triangle was thinking. Bill lit up and he smiled with his eye. "Oh yeah! I'm a mystical demonic being of pure energy! Of course I can help!"

The boy raised an eyebrow curious. "How?"

"I could tell you how to solve the ciphers if you let me possess your body at night, and then I'd also be able to help you when you're too tired. Win win if you ask me." The demon put his hands on his 'hips'.

Dipper's gut sank and his mouth gaped. "P-possession?"

"Yeah. I walk around in your body. That way, you won't have stay up so late. And I don't get tired because I'm not a physical being."

"Uh... can I think about it?"

"Sure, kid. I'll be waiting!" He lit up his hand in a blue fire and held it out for Dipper.

He stared at it hesitantly. He wanted the answers but... the thought of someone else posing as him put butterflies in his stomach. It would make finding Ford easier though, right? And Bill was just trying to help. Surely the triangle wouldn't want to harm him. He took a deep breath. It'll all be worth it.

"Alright. I... I'll do it." And he shook Bill's hand.

Present...

"Hey, Dipper."

"Yes, Mabel?"

"I, uh, want to talk to you about something." She grinned awkwardly in the mirror, and she saw her cousin's eyes roll. They were in the bathroom, Mabel brushing her hair and Dipper brushing his teeth. She sat on the edge of the bathtub behind him, the brush in one hand.

He spit in the sink. "I thought you were done being annoying," he said, glaring at her through the mirror.

"I was... but then last night something happened." She set down the brush and ran her hands through her hair. Her stomach was in a knot, trying to think of a way to bring up Bill. "I met your... friend."

He raised an eyebrow, toothbrush in his mouth. He made a mumbled noise, which Mabel deciphered as, "What do you mean?"

She avoided eye contact with him, wondering if she should continue. "I know about BIll Cipher."

Her cousin choked on his toothpaste. He spit it into the sink and wiped his mouth. Dipper spun around to face her. "I- How- W-what did he tell you?" He went from panicked to trying to play it cool, making Mabel even more curious.

"Well, I met him before last night, but last night it wasn't in my dreams."

He turned back to the mirror. "I don't know what you're talking about. He only appears in dream."

Mabel crossed her arms and narrowed her eyes. "I think you do know what I'm talking about, Dipper. Explain how you ended up a were-Bipper."

"A were-Bipper?"

"Like a werewolf but instead it's a Bill-Dipper. Bipper."

He set down his toothbrush and leaned against the sink. "We made a deal so I would be able to stay up later."

"Why?" She tilted her head.

"Because... I'm trying to save my dad."

Mabel gaped. "Like, reopen the portal? But what if he's..." Neither of them needed her to finish her sentence.

"He's alive Mabel. He has to be. Bill is helping me try to find him."

"It didn't seem like he was helping open the portal," she mumbled, looking away.

"What?"

"You don't remember?"

"I don't remember anything while he's possessing me."

"Oh. Well, he was stealing Mt. Dew from the fridge."

Dipper turned pink and frowned. "I-it's been a slow process lately, okay?" He avoided eye contact, clearly embarrassed.

"But is it safe? Being possessed, I mean." She felt like she was constantly worried for her cousin, despite what little care he had for himself.

"I'm fine." It didn't sound to convincing.

"Dipper-"

"Mabel, sweetie!" Stan called from downstairs. Both teens looked to the bathroom door. "Can you come help me? I think someone poured something sticky on the ground. It's gross."

Mabel shot Dipper a look, and he rubbed the back of his neck. She got up and walked towards the door. "This conversation isn't over."

"Yes it is," he said.

She rolled her eyes and continued out the door. She just wanted hm to be safe. If only he cared himself.
