Cardan grabs one of his wings. It tears like paper, I flinch. The boy's scream is thin and reedy. He curls up into himself on the ground, agony plain on his face. I see the twin mortals looking over at Cardan... now this will be fun. Cardan starts walking away, Nicasia and Valerain glance back but then move with him. I pause knowing this is the time to start the story, I help the boy onto his feet, I look up at one of the mortals and meet her eyes. She looks confused, unmoving. I pretend that I am surprised and widen my eyes like I taught myself at the age of 10, then I smiled my most secretive smile. Let the games begin.
