Chapter 1: It is What it is
Kay (Kayjah), five years later. . .
"Mommy!" My little man shouted from behind me.
I quickly turned around and crouched down with my arms out in front of me. He ran right into my embrace, giggling and I smiled, wrapping my arms around him.
"Hey, baby. How was school and where's your auntie and sister?" I inquired, looking behind him in the office of their school.
"She and Ary coming." He smiled, pulling back from our hug.
Standing up straight, I grabbed his hand and turned towards the door to see Aryana and Athena laughing and talking while walking into the office. They both looked up at me and the smile on their faces dropped.
"What the heck took y'all so long? Y'all knew I was coming, and y'all know I got some place to be. C'mon." I huffed, pointing out the door.
They both scoffed, rolling their eyes. They sluggishly turned around, and walked out the door.
"Kari, close yo' eyes. I don't want you to see yo' sista and Auntie get beat." I said, looking at the back of their heads.
"No!" They both shouted, running down the hallway toward the double doors.
"Mommy, you so silly." Ahkari giggled, looking up at me.
I weakly smiled looking down at him and shook off the tears I felt coming. He looked just like his Daddy more and more each day. Especially when he smiled.
"We going see Nannah, Mommy?" He asked, snapping me out of my thoughts.
"Yes, baby. We are going over there as soon as we come back from visiting your Father. He misses you." I replied.
He instantly started jumping up and down.
"We going see Daddy?" He asked, smiling from ear to ear.
"Yes. He's been asking about you." I smiled, pushing open the door and letting him go out first.
He ran down the steps and down the cement pathway that led to the street. My 2015, Chevrolet Malibu was parked in front of the school. I smiled, shaking my head. Vincent was going to be just as excited as he was in a minute.
"So y'all two coming with me to go see Vincent?" I asked, getting into the car.
When no one said anything, I looked in the rearview mirror while closing my door. Thena was looking at Ary and Ary was looking at me through the mirror with a straight face.
"Why y'all look lost?" I asked, starting the car.
"Ma, you know I love Daddy, but the last time we went to go visit him, he told you not to come back. He said send someone else with us to go up there. I don't want him to make you cry again." Ary said, shaking her head.
I sighed, closing my eyes before smiling softly, "Your Father says a lot of stuff that I don't take into consideration, honey. You know this. He can tell me he hates me, but I will still be up at that prison on Tuesday, smiling in his face like there's no tomorrow. Now, like I said before, who's coming?"
"Me." Athena whispered.
"Me." Ary sighed, rolling her eyes.
"Me!" Ahkari blurted out, making me laugh.
"Okay. Ary, make sure your brother is strapped into his seat, please." I said, pulling off down the street.
"Mommy, I did it by myself. I big boy." He smiled, proudly into the mirror.
