One of his hands gripped hers. The other had perched itself ever so lightly on her waist. He could feel her surprise and sadness; they both knew she didn't have much time left. He looked to her eyes; they were full of a question that would never pass through her lips. He answered anyway.
"Just one dance. Please. Before I- before I lose you..."
She nodded, once. There wasn't a need for anything else.
Holding her fragile form close to his, he led the slow, careful dance.
There was emptiness in the air; he knew he had to fill it somehow.
And so he did.
At first his voice was barely a whisper, creaky and croaking and the most beautiful sound she had ever or ever would hear.
"You are my Sunshine.....
My only sunshine...."
Her heartbroken smile, full of unshed tears, made him more determined than ever. His voice, still soft, grew stronger.
"You make me happy...
When skies are grey..."
He caught her as she lurched, shaking like a leaf in the wind. He quieted and was about to set her down on the hospital bed when she shook her head violently, pleading for the dance to go on in her own silent way.
He obeyed, at this point holding her bridal-style, swaying gently to replace the actual dance, and resumed his soft singing.
"You'll never know, dear....
How much I love you..."
Her head slowly reclined against his arm, her eyes closing for the last time. Sobs choked the final verse of the song:
"So please don't take....
My Sunshine....
Away..."
