You slowly open your eyes and look around startled. This isn’t your room. You sit up in a panic, but then yesterday comes flooding back to your head and you sigh. You get up because you hear something. You follow it downstairs and outside onto the back porch where you watch as Niall strums the guitar and hums softly. You accidently slip and fall disrupting him. He runs over. “You alright,” he asks concerned. “Uh yeah I’m fine.” He reaches down and pulls you up. “So whataya think,” he asks as he walks over to where he was playing. “You’re really good.” He smiles up at you, “ya think so?” “Definitely.” He looks down and starts strumming again. After a moment he looks over at you, “So whataya looking for…I mean your lost, so where are ya tryin to get?” “Oh, my mom’s shipping me off to this band camp thing until August, and then if I like it, she’s going to enroll me into the school they have.” He stopped playing, “Why she sending ya off to band camp?” You look down as your eyes start to fill with tears. You cough, “It’s uh complicated.” Niall started to strum again, “Oh sorry, didn’t mean to pry.” “Hey Niall can I talk to ______ alone please,” you hear Harry say from the doorway. You sigh and look away dreading this conversation, as Niall gets up and does a little half-wave before he walks away. You hear Harry walk to the chair and sit down, “Hey look I know you’re mad but—“ “Mad,” you cut him off, “No, why on earth would I be mad?” “____, give me a chance to explain.” “Explain what? How you stop talking to your best friend, how you lose connection with the person who knew you better than you know yourself, or how you walked away so easily from someone who truly cared about you?” “Let me explain all of those things.” “No, just save it! I don’t have time for your bull, okay. I’m just trying to find this stupid camp I’m supposed to be going to okay!” You look over at Harry sitting there looking somewhat hurt but you don’t stop, “Whatever you think is going to happen with us right now is totally wrong. There’s nothing happening here. Just help me find this stupid camp and I swear we can both go back to life without each other. Okay, Ha-“ you choke on his name. You turn quickly so he doesn’t see the tears starting to build again. “_____, can’t you just listen?” “No,” you say as you walk away, “I don’t want to hear anything you have to say.” You walk into Louis as you wipe your tears. “You alright, love?” “Uh yeah, I’m fine,” you say as you walk inside. You continue to walk past everybody up to the girls’ room and you fall back onto the mattress. You hear the door open as El comes in quietly. “Uh ____, I know we barely know each other, but if you need to talk to anybody I’ll listen.” You turn to face her, “Basically Ha-; he and I used to be friends, but now I think it’s pretty much broken beyond repair.” “Nonsense,” El shook her head, “No friendship is broken beyond repair. You just gotta give Haz a chance to explain himself. Remember there are two sides to every story.” She got up and walked out and you started thinking. Was it really that easy? Could you honestly just let him explain and try to fix the broken relationship you both had at one time? You got up and walked to the stairs, but stopped to listen to the boys. “I’m trying to explain my side to her but she won’t listen” “Give her some space maybe she’ll come around,” said Louis. You heard someone else laugh and say, “who cares?” “Zayn, don’t be rude,” El said quietly. “Yeah,” Harry chimed in, “She’s a guest, and she’s lost. Why are you so against her anyway?” “I know why,” Louis said teasingly. “Why then,” said Zayn sarcastically. “You’re mad she doesn’t remember you.” “What are you talking about Lou,” Harry said confused. “NOTHING,” Zayn said quickly, “Drop it Louis.” “Tell me,” Harry said impatiently. “No, drop it.” You stomp down, making it clear that you’re coming down stairs. The boys change the subject, and you walk past them pretending you don’t know a thing. You walk out to the back and sit down trying to piece this huge puzzle together. How is it possible that you knew Zayn, but now you can’t remember? You think but nothing comes to mind, so you give up. You hear the back door open. “Hey ____, look what I found,” Louis says as he flashes an old picture of you and Harry. Can you believe he still has this? You look and you realizes it’s a picture your mom took the day you and Harry became neighbors. You remember that day perfectly. “Hey Louis,” you say quietly. “Yeah?” “How is it possible that two people who are so close, slowly drift apart and never speak to each other again.” Louis sighed and sat down. “I think you should ask yourself and Harry that question.” “I thought we were gonna be friends forever, Lou, I really did,” you say as you start to tear up. Louis pulls you close, “I think you should really give Haz a chance, he really cares about you. I know you don’t think that because of how long it’s been but he still talks about you every once in a while, and I know he wants to make it right. And I know what you’re thinking, why should I listen to a guy I barely know? Well, I may not know you that well, but I can tell when a two people have a connection, and if I were you, I wouldn’t break that connection.” “Don’t do you get it Louis? It’s already broken,” you say as you break down crying. Louis pulls you into his lap and strokes your hair, “It may have a little crack but I don’t think it’s completely broken. I see the way he looks at you. He knows he hurt you, but he wants to make it right. Maybe you could just stop pushing him away and when you both are ready, you can talk it out.” You look up at him and smile, “Yeah maybe.” You sit up and wipe your face. Louis moves a piece of hair from your face, “for the record, you look a lot better when you smile, love.” You laugh, but stop when you hear a door slam behind you. You smell smoke and cough. You look over and see Zayn puffing on a cigarette. You start coughing hard and Louis looks at you concerned, “You alright?” “I’m allergic.” “Zayn, put it out,” Louis says quietly. Zayn looks over at you two and rolls his eyes, “She can go inside if she’s uncomfortable.” Louis sighs and gets up. “Come on, _____, Zayn’s in a bit of a sour mood today apparently. You walk inside and see Harry sitting on the couch eating breakfast but then you both make eye contact, you turn to go but Louis gets in your way and motions you over to where he is. You roll your eyes and go sit down on the couch to watch whatever Harry is watching. A funny commercial comes on and both you and Harry laugh at it, then look at each other awkwardly. Harry leans forward and mumbles, “can we please talk?” You nod and follow him up to his room, hoping for the best but expecting the worst…
