2009 -

as jiung sat at the top of the double slides, getting ready to slide down, he felt someone tap on his shoulder lightly. he turned around and was met with the sight of a boy who seemed to be his age.

"hi, want to be friends?" the boy said to jiung, an english accent and broken korean making it a little difficult for jiung to understand.

"sure! i'm jiung, whats your name?"

"i'm ste- i'm keeho, nice to meet you!" the boy ー keeho ー sat on the slide next to jiung's.

"how old are you?" jiung asked, a smile still plastered on his face.

"i just turned nine! what about you?"

"i'm turning nine soon!"

the two boys talked about random things, such as their favorite video games or what food they like to eat for dinner. they sat at the top of the slides until sunset when their mothers came to get them.

"keeho sweetie, its time to go home," keeho's mother said, walking towards the end of the slide.

soon jiung's mom appeared there, too.

"come on, jiung. lets go," his mom said.

the boys glanced at each other before sliding down at the same time.

"mom, can we come here again tomorrow? i want to play with keeho!" jiung said, lightly tugging at his mom's sweater.

keeho looked up at his mom, asking his mom something with korean and english mixed together. as his mom nodded her head, jiung looked up at his mom who smiled and said "sure."

"bye bye!" jiung called out to keeho who was walking the opposite way.

"bye, see you tomorrow!" keeho called back before skipping along to his car.

from that day on, the two were inseparable. they hung out practically everyday, always meeting up at the playground.

keeho and jiung were sitting on the swings, lightly swinging in silence. keeho decided to break the peaceful quietness.

"i'm going back to canada. i-i'm leaving tomorrow."

jiung furrowed his eyebrows. he remembered the older saying he might go back to canada one day, but he didn't know it would be so soon. after all, keeho and his mother had been in korea for about two months.

"why aren't you staying here longer? why didn't you tell me sooner? will you come back soon?" jiung fired multiple questions out at once.

keeho looked down at his lap.

"my mom said we were only here as a vacation. i'm sorry i didn't tell you sooner, i wanted to but i kept forgetting. i don't think we're coming back anytime soon.." keeho's voice almost broke at the end but he managed to keep strong.

a soft sigh came from jiung's mouth. he turned to face the sunset, which was behind keeho. the younger's gaze landed on keeho, who had the sun shining behind him, giving him a glowing outline. jiung felt his cheeks lightly burn as he realized he really liked the way keeho looked.

the older turned his head to face jiung, who shined a gold from facing the sun. keeho thought he looked really pretty like this.

they looked away the second they made eye contact, similar things rushing through their heads.

do i have a crush on him? no, that's impossible. he's a boy, i'm a boy. thats not how things work.

why do i think he looks pretty? why do i keep wanting to look at him?

what did they know about feelings though? they were kids. they only had a few crushes in the past, nothing like this. nothing like how they felt towards each other.

before they knew it, it was time to part ways. tomorrow would be the last day they get to see each other.

with quiet goodbyes, they left the playground.

many thoughts filled their young minds as their moms drove them home.
