Chapter One

Prim

I feel a sharp pain in my left forearm and become aware of the sounds around me. I try to open my eyes but I find that my eye lids are too heavy. So I give up and listen to the sounds around me. There's a very loud and even beeping coming from right beside me. I strain to listen beyond the beeping, I hear many noises, agonising painful human screams, voices, and other quicker beeping.

The sounds are so painful. I try to listen less and almost instantly I hear nothing. Carefully I allow some sounds to register. Just beyond the beeping I hear voices.

I concentrate on what they're saying. I hear something like this, "Who is she, John?" says a female voice.

"I don't know, Sarah. Should we tell the president?" Replies a man, who I guess is John.

"What if she is from one of the districts?” Asks Sarah, "Can't be, there were only Capital kids in there." says John. There's silence for a while then Sarah says in a whisper, "John, she is the only survivor, all the others were killed. Out of all the peacekeepers medics and children she is the only one left." I try again open my eyes, but to no avail.

I must of fallen asleep because the next thing I know I've opened my eyes and I'm in a starkly bare room. I look around and see that there is no door. As I look I see the wall move revealing a tall woman holding a tray, when she moves toward me the wall slides back into place.

The woman places the tray on my bed. Once she does, she puts up a finger and indicates fir me to look at her finger, so I do. She pulls out a light and shines it in my eyes, checking my vitals. How do I know that? My thoughts jumble together so I stop thinking and just observe the woman.

She has blond hair and blue eyes. When I look closer I see that her eyes show deep signs of grief. Her hair is messily tied into a high bun. Her skin is pale and tight like she's lost a lot of weight in a short time.

Deep in my mind I know her but I don't know where from.

I open my mouth to ask her, her name. But no sounds cone out. Confused I close my mouth. The woman gives me knowing look. "You won’t be able to speak for quite some time because you damaged your vocal chords. You should be able to speak in a week tops." The woman’s voice is horse and I notice the red rings around her eyes.

I nod in understanding. The movement hurts. "I don't believe I introduced myself," the woman says, "I am Mrs Everdeen and you have been put under my care for your stay here."

I know who she is now. She is my Mum.

I try again to speak but it doesn't work. When my mum sees she says, "Don't worry they will heal. Your body is almost healed." The next thing she says is full of sorrow, "I'm so sorry but because of that we had to enter you into the Capital Hunger Games."

I have dreams that night but not about The Capital Hunger Games. I dream about the bombings.
