Around that corner was something that I will never be able to forget. My mothers limp, lifeless body sprawled across the floor. I wailed in horror and shock. I turned to my left to see the monsters hands held out in front of its body. He looked up at me reached his hand out. He looked as if he had something to say to me but he couldn't. I screamed in anger. "You monster! You filthy piece of..." I stopped. His eyes hardened with anger. I had stepped out of line.I had the same fate as my sweet mother.
Knowing what would happen next, I grabbed the nearest object and threw it in the monster's face. It just so happened to be my mother's least favorite lamp. I ran up the stairs and slammed the door. My bag was there at the foot of the bed. My mother had our bags packed for years, hoping that one day we would get the chance to run away. Tears swell up in my eyes at the thought of her.
BANG
It sounds like the monster had fallen. Now was my chance. I swing the bag around my shoulders and go to the closet door. Hiding behind the coats, I hear the door open. There's not enough time! I quietly move the hat boxes and open the door hidden on the closet floor. Slowly climbing down the weak ladder, I keep the hatch door open with one arm as I slide the boxes back overtop the door. My foot slips and the door slams the rest of the way shut. He had to have heard that. I turn on the spot and run as fast as I can. The darkness of the tunnel causes me to trip over my own feet. I can see the end. Although it's night, the sky is ever so much lighter than here. I reach the end of the tunnel and grab hold of the rope. I stop mid climb and remember my mother one more time. Her pale and gentle face, holding my shaking body on nights very similar to these. I use all my strength to pull me up to the ground.
I just keep running.

CHAPTER 3
3 YEARS LATER
*** *** *** *** ***I can hear footsteps behind me. Not again. I turn sharply on the spot and catch a glimpse of something hiding behind a tree. I turn back around and tiptoe through the dead grass. My ears perk up at another sound of steps behind me. I pretend not to hear and slowly moved forward.
I continue walking, keeping my steps gentle enough to hear someone else's footsteps several feet behind me. I stop completely and look at the trees in front of me. I slowly bend down and pick up a stone. I pull back my arm and hurl it at the tree. It doesn't down. With this information, I bolt ahead and scale the tree. The branches and leaves are thick, hiding my body from view. I hear footsteps coming at a slow, cautious pace.
