Divergent is an amazing book series that I recommend.
In sort, there are 5 factions. Dauntless, Abnegation, Erudite, Amity, and Candor. You're obviously born into one, but you take a test when you're 16 to see what faction best suits you. Then, on the day of the Choosing Ceremony, you spill your blood over a bowl with a material that represents your chosen faction.
The Dauntless stand for bravery. Most have tattoos and piercings. Their color is black.
The Abnegation believe in selflessness. Their color is gray. Fun fact, I took a test and this is the faction I got XD
The Erudite stand for logic and learning new things. Their color is blue.
The Amity stand for peace and harmony. They strongly dislike violence. Their colors are red, yellow, and orange.
The Candor believe in only telling the truth. Their colors are black and white.
Of course you could also do an AU where it's after the war and the factions are abolished.
