Jaxon Pov
Hey, it’s me again.

It’s Thursday, which means our classes end at noon. A breather in the middle of a long week. I was walking down the hallway, minding my own business, when I noticed someone behind me. The kind of feeling you get when you know someone’s been trying to approach you but can’t quite gather the courage.

I stopped and turned.

“Hi.” he said.

Zayne.

I sighed, jaw tightening a little as I looked at him.

“What is it?” I asked.

“If you’re free after class... maybe we could talk?” he said.

I looked at him for a moment, measuring that question. Part of me wanted to say no. Things between us haven’t exactly been smooth since everything that happened. And honestly, I’ve spent enough time picking up pieces Zayne helped break...especially when it came to Louise.

But maybe... maybe a conversation could end whatever tension’s still lingering.

“Where do you want to talk?” I asked, voice steady. His expression softened a little, like he didn’t expect me to say yes.

“The park near the arts center. After lunch. Thanks, Vance.”

He ran off after that.

Vance.

I haven’t heard that name in a while. Most people just call me Jaxon now. Zayne used to call me that when things were still okay between all of us...before the fights, the silence, the hurt. Hearing it again felt strange, like an echo from a different time.

I walked into class. Everyone was already inside. My eyes automatically scanned the room...habit, I guess...and landed on Vanessa. She was already watching me. I gave her a small smile and made my way to my seat.

Class passed by the usual way...discussions, notes, the occasional distracted glance at the clock. Then finally...

RINGGGGGGGG.

The bell echoed and everyone rushed out like we’d just been set free. I packed my things, slinging my bag over my shoulder, when Vanessa came over and gently took my hand.

“You got plans today?” she asked softly.

“Actually... someone asked to talk after lunch” I replied, eyes meeting hers.

“Who?” she asked, her expression unreadable. I glanced briefly at Louise, who was chatting with Kylie across the room. Then I turned back to her.

“Zayne.”

“Why does he want to talk to you?” Her brow raised slightly. I sighed.

“He said he just wants to talk. Clear things, maybe. I’m not sure what to expect. But... if you’re not okay with it, I won’t go.”

She was quiet for a moment, then shook her head and smiled...though it didn’t quite reach her eyes.

“It’s okay. It’s your decision.” she said. I nodded.

“I’ve got an hour free before then. Want me to walk you home?” I asked. She gave a small laugh.

“Why are you being so sweet today?” she asked. I just shrugged.

“Then let’s eat first” she said, tugging at my hand. That’s when Louise came over, that usual glint of mischief in her eyes.
