Circa. June 2014CARMENS POV
I watched the time as it got closer to the end of service. It wasn't much longer but the cool breeze from big mommas paper fan and her outburst of 'mmhm pastor', ' god will do it', made the remainder feel like an eternity. I hated coming to the camp. Too old for the children's program but too little to sit with the big kids in the youth group. Since I couldn't participate in the camp Big momma suggested that I helped her assist them. Which is basically just code for me having to cleaning up after all the kids in camp.
It wasn't that bad once you got used to it but on days where the afternoon service seemed like it would never stop, the church songs felt ever lasting, and even the big kids were taking a nap, it made me want to nudge big momma back for calling me 'disobedient'.
The pastor walked over taking a sip from his drink and I knew that the service was about done. Interrupting Big momma from her trance in prayer I tapped her shoulder. Her gaze struck down to me and I knew I had her full attention.
"Can I get a head start? I'll be in Uh, Mrs. Johnson's room." I asked her with pleading eyes
"Alright, just make sure you don't break nothing. You hear?" She asked and I nodded back
She planted a small kiss on my cheek, sweeping me off of the church seats helping me get down. Without disturbing anyone, I quietly made my way out of the room and roamed around the building. It was quiet, mostly as the only sound heard throughout it was the faint sound of the choir singing the exit song.
When I finally reached Ms.Johnson's room, I catch my brother and one of the Ball boys talking. I'm not even sure which one of them it is being I never talked to them. I only knew it was one of the ball boys because he coincidentally had a basketball in his arm. I remember Drew always talking about shooting hoops with them.
Opening the closet with all the cleaning supplies I took out gloves and a rag. I looked around seeing that someone had put the cleaner bottle on a high shelf. I struggled jumping and reaching my hand out to reach the cleaner bottle. I glanced over at my brother, who I'm sure hears my aggravation as I let out small huffs.
"Can you hand me the cleanser bottle, D?" I asked politely
My brother, Drew, stares at me like I had grown another head, blankly staring me down. "Aye, I think she's talking to you." The Ball boy tells my brother as he tapped his shoulder then pointed in my direction to get my brothers attention for me
"I know, it's my little sister" drew replies with a laugh, I sit there embarrassed but not as much as I am annoyed. I despised the way he'd treat me in front of friends. I wasn't sure what he gained from doing so but I guess it's since he thought it made him cool. He continued unbothered "anyways like I was saying..."
Ignoring my brother completely the ball brother walks over to the closet. Once he gets close enough I move over giving him full access to the closet. His taller figure easily grabbed the spray bottled cleaner, bringing it down to my level. "Here you go." I lowly thanked him and quickly dragged my tense body into Ms. Johnson's room. I find myself having a hard time breathing, like he'd sucked the oxygen out of my body. But the even weirder thing was, I kind of liked it. Footsteps followed behind me before a tap him my shoulder. "Uh, you had dropped the rag"
I managed to turn my body around, matching up with the same tall figure I'd just encountered. "Wow." I whispered to myself as I was close, face to face or more accurately face to chest. to what I believe is the most cutest boy I have seen in my life. In all of my eleven years I don't believe I had every seen a being more better than him.
