“Could all passengers please fasten your seat belt, and turn off all electrical devices, we are preparing for landing.” The flight attendant called over the loud speaker; thank god I took my motion sickness medication. Curse my stupid stomach, I can go boating for hours, even bush bashing, but put me a plane, or a car on a long windy road, and I could puke my guts out.
I picked up my luggage, or what I had, Aunt Ell said she’d send my stuff, not that I have much. I walk outside and up to a man holding a sign with my name on it. “Spencer?” His voice had a thrick Texan accent, oh bot, I just know I’m going to sound so obviously Australian. “That’s me! You must be Uncle Greg? Hi, you can call me Nell.” I extend my hand for him to shake and he does so while eyeing my outfit a frown on his face. I look down at my worn out jeans, singlet with a red flannel shirt over top. “What did you expect, a dress and high heels?.” I ask with my eyebrow raised. Greg’s face brakes into a massive grin. “I was just under the impression that you were a city girl, your Aunt sends you from LA. Clearly I was wrong, so my big brother went to Australia did he?” Um… “Yeah? So we gonna stand here all day or…?” “haha yeah I hear you follow me?” I followed Greg out and we walked to slightly fade red Chevy Ute. “We had a Holden Ute back home, I kicked up the turbo, it went like a bullet a gate!” Greg looked at me weirdly, oh… “Sorry pickup truck?” “Oh Australians call it a Ute do they? That’s cool, so you are a bit of a mechanic.” “I am a bit of a grease monkey, yes.”
We drove along for at least a couple of hours; they are Cattle farmers, I’m so happy to be out of the city. “So this is the property, it’s over 160 hectares so It’s an okay size, definitely not the biggest.” Gregg said with a shrug. We pulled up in front of a two story house, it looked like it also had an attic.
“Head in, I’m sure Kerrey or one of the boys could show you to your room.” I do as he says and walk into the house, only to be promptly ambushed by a woman a couple of years younger than Greg. “Hello Spencer, I’m your aunt Kerrey, the boys are out mending a fence so they won’t be back for a couple of hours, I don’t want you to be overwhelmed there are 5 of them.” A smile, a weak but genuine smile. “Call me Nell, Kerrey, and not to worry I did have sibling, I have just encounter a lot of…” “Trouble?” oh she is so nice “Well Death, but I guess trouble is a nicer way to put it.” My smile turning to a frown. “Oh Honey, come I’ll show you to your room.” I simply nod. “We are a little full so I had to improvise.” We climbed the stairs to the attic she peaks as she opens the door. “I hope you like it, I didn’t do too much, I thought you’d want to decorate it yourself. Good thing too, Greg was under the impression you would be some fancy pants city girl like that aunt of yours.” I laughed, it had been so long since I laughed, it felt good. “It’s perfect, and yes she can be quite a witch at times.” “Haha, okay I’ll leave you to get unpack, dinner should be around 6.30, come down then.” “bye, and thank you.” I yell after her as she leaves. I think I may get used to this.
