"Are you ready, Hongjoong? You have to tag along so-"
Hongjoong interrupted his father's words, bored out of his mind. "So I could know what to do when I have to take over. I know, dad, I know."
Hongjoong's father smiled a smile that made Hongjoong lowkey pissed off, standing so casually in the doorframe of Hongjoong's room. "Good! Come on, let's start my schedule."
Hongjoong huffed, standing up from where he was sitting on his own bed. "Why!? I've been doing this every day! Can I please just not for one day?"
Hongjoong's dad sighed. "Becoming King has no breaks, Joong-"
"Don't call me that!"
Hongjoong's dad let out another sigh, his tone of voice going somewhat pleading. "Hongjoong, You're going to take the responsibilities of becoming the ruler of our perfect kingdom someday, and you need to know what to do. Ruling is not easy, and it doesn't seem like you know that. Besides, you're done with school now, what else are you going to do?"
Hongjoong let his shoulders drop, staring at his feet. He knew his father was right, but he was just too stubborn.
Eventually, his father turned and took a step out of the room. "Look, Hongjoong, I'll see you in a few minutes in the throne room. Don't be late."
Hongjoong muttered. "...yes father..."
"Good. Get ready and look... presentable."
Hongjoong didn't move until he heard his door click shut and his father's footsteps echo down the hallway.
Hongjoong didn't like his father very much. Hongjoong's dad had some strange and skewed morals and was quite blind to the feelings of others than his own. His father was quite selfish, and Hongjoong hated that he had to follow in that man's footsteps.
But Hongjoong's father was more than oblivious to what Hongjoong was feeling.
Sure, Hongjoong protests from time to time and gives his opinions on certain matters, but his dad always says that he couldn't make his own decisions because his "decisions were rash because of his immaturity."
Safe to say that Hongjoong and his dad's relationship wasn't the best.
Grumbling, Hongjoong slipped on his shoes that were too expensive for their use and stood up. He was about to walk out of the room when-
The door burst open. "Hey, Hongjoong!"
Two figures stumbled in, reminding Hongjoong of drunk people trying to walk at 3 AM after partying for too long. The two giggled, the one on the right giving Hongjoong a bright smile. "Why are you looking so moody?"
Hongjoong raised an eyebrow. "Moody? San, I'm not-"
San interrupted, eyeing Hongjoong up and down. "Uh yeah, it looks like you woke up on the wrong side of the bed. Don't you agree, Woo?"
Hongjoong shook his head. "Wooyoung, I-"
Wooyoung let out a small cackle. "Yeah. Who took a shit in your cereal?"
Hongjoong gave the two a look. "Times like these make me question how the hell are you two even part of the royal guard."
San fake pouted. "Hey! We can be serious when we want to be."
Wooyoung nodded vigorously. "Yeah. I'd say we are some of the best members of the royal guard."
"I'd disagree-"
"Okay, but have you ever been kidnapped?"
"No, but-"
"How about killed? Are you dead?"
"No-"
San smirked like a demon. "Exactly. If we didn't exist, then you'd probably not be in one piece right now."
Hongjoong's jaw dropped. "But that's not- How- That's not how it works! Oh my god."
Wooyoung wiggled his eyebrows playfully. "That's totally how it works. You exist, we mandate your life."
Hongjoong groaned. "I swear to god. Why do I keep you guys around again?"
Wooyoung wrapped an arm around San's shoulders, his other arm raised in the air in a celebratory manner. "Because you love us!"
Hongjoong blinked as he stared at the two, the two wearing matching smiles on their faces. "Yeah, sure. Anyways, I need to go catch up with my father again."
San nodded, his and Wooyoung's demeanor both becoming visibly more confident and serious. "Right. We'll escort you to him. Come on."
Hongjoong followed the two royal guard members out of his room and down the hallway.
San and Wooyoung were probably some of the only people in the royal kingdom that Hongjoong knew that he actually didn't hate. The two royal guard members have been around to protect Hongjoong for quite a while now, which is a bit surprising because the two seemed to be not much older than him. They were like his personal guards and Hongjoong knew very well that they could fight, but when they aren't defending him they act pretty much as if they were on drugs.
Hongjoong trailed behind Wooyoung and San, who were now currently whispering in each other's ears in giggling about something.
The two were clearly very close, and Hongjoong has barely seen them separated for more than an hour.
Hongjoong sighed as he was led into the throne room, spotting his father talking to some of his advisors.
Here we go for another long day.
---
The day went by at a snail's pace and it was soon enough time to eat dinner.
Honestly, one of the things that Hongjoong didn't mind about being royal was the food, because damn, these chefs knew how to cook. The food was literally godly.
But today, Hongjoong was not really feeling it. Of course, he always felt this way about his father, but for some reason today he felt even more bitter about the situation. He knew he was going to have to step up one day to be king and be covered in responsibilities, but it just seemed so boring.
Hongjoong silently wished for something to happen. Maybe if something interesting happened he could say that his royal life would be slightly less boring.
Hongjoong sighed as he leaned back in his seat, setting his fork and knife down as he made eye contact with San. San, Wooyoung, and some of the other royal guard members literally had to stand around the perimeter as they ate literally just "for security."
Don't worry, they get fed later.
Hongjoong mouthed a "help me", causing San to chuckle and shake his head, shrugging as if to say that he can't do anything about it.
Hongjoong tapped his fingers on the table rhythmically. Why couldn't something interesting happen?
Suddenly, two sharp and frantic knocks came from the door. The door opened quickly, a man stepping in. The man's facial expression radiated panic, his voice coming out shaky. "I'm s-sorry to interrupt, but something happened and it's really urgent!"
Hongjoong's dad turned to the man, quirking an eyebrow. "It better be. What happened?"
"There's been a murder!"
Hongjoong's dad looked unamused. "Okay? Murders happen all the time, what's the issue?"
The man trembled.
"This one is very different from any normal murder."
