First Day

Cricket was SO EXCITED for her new school.

She was going to learn about how to enhance her magic and do awesome stuff with it! Maybe she could even find some books about it!

But first she had to find her classroom.

She was trying to weave through the crowd of students, but she kept bumping into people. Sometimes she would almost trip over an animal underfoot, presumably a Fluxer trying to escape the chaos.

A person's magic bubbled up on their tenth birthday. Then they started fifth grade at a magic school.

Today was Cricket's first day, and it was really overwhelming her. She was used to a fairly quiet life at home where her parents pretty much ignored her. Her sister, Katydid, was the only one who really looked after her. And she hadn't had very many friends at school.

Her old school hadn't been nearly as loud. I thought the older kids were supposed to be quieter, not louder, she thought. It was giving her a headache.

Then she saw the library doors and ducked inside, shutting the door firmly behind her.

Whew, that's a relief. Some sound filtered in through the doors, but it was way quieter here than in the halls. It would give her a chance to collect herself.

Shelves lined the walls and stood in the middle of the library, rows and rows of stories waiting to be read. There were windows lining the wall to her right, letting sunlight fill the room. And along the wall with the windows, there were carpets and beanbag chairs for people to sit while they read.

The sight of the comfy-looking library filled her with peace. This was, and always has been, her safe place. She belonged here.

Then she spotted someone. He was sitting on the carpet and frowning at a book spread out in front of him. He had black hair and dark green eyes. He wore a black sweater with the sleeves rolled up, black pants and black shoes. He looked a bit older than her.

She walked over to him. "Hi," she said.

He looked up at her. "Hello," he replied.

"What's your name? Why are you in here? Are you studying? Did I interrupt you?" She asked.

"My name is Starflight. And no, you didn't interrupt me," he said. "I'm just working on some extra work I need to do. My dad is a teacher, so I'm always here early."

"Really? My mom is a teacher, too. What is your dad's name?" She asked curiously.

"Mr. Mastermind. Who is your mom?" He asked.

"Mrs. Cadelle," she answered. "Well, class is probably starting soon, so we should get going."

He looked alarmed. "Already? Wow. Let's go, then."

As we walked he asked, "What's your name?"

"Cricket," I replied. "I'm a Flicker, what about you?"

"I'm a Flicker, too," he said.

"Oh, really?" She asked, intrigued. "What grade are you in?"

"Six," he replied.

"What kind of stuff do you learn?" She fired at him. "Are you good at it? How many people are there? Are they nice? What kind of things can you make invisible?"

"Uh," he stuttered. "We're working on toads. I'm pretty good at it; I can make most of it invisible. But sometimes I miss some parts."

"Cool," she said, awestruck. "I've tried to make my food disappear before, but then my mother got mad at me, so I don't try very much anymore."
