"Can we please stop?" a pregnant woman pleaded. Her feet ached from the long walks, and the added weight was no help.
Their leader looked at her sympathetically. "We can't stop."
And so they forged on, through dark groves of trees and vast expanses of grass. Months passed, and yet no sign of the civilization they had been looking for was there.
The leader's son and the woman's child had been born in a dark forest, watched over by his mother, his father, and his older brother. His parents named him Free De La Hoya.
The group traveled for ten more years, crossing barren lands and dense jungles. There was almost no hope left, until they saw distant fires towards the west in the middle of winter.
"Kaen," their leader announced. "The kingdom of fire."
"How do you know?" one shouted yet again.
Their leader sighed wearily. "The knowledge of the kingdoms have been passed down for many generations. We have not been strong enough to venture there yet, but now we are, and soon we will find them."
His son Free did not support his father. His eyes were dark from walking in the night for so long. His skin was pale. His hair was the color of hay, bar a red streak. A knife and a small pouch hung from his belt.
"Why can we not rest, Father?" he asked calmly.
"We have enemies," his father warned. "They will do anything to keep us from reaching the kingdoms."
Free's mother fidgeted nervously. Her bow was gripped tightly in her hands. "Please—" "No," her husband said firmly. He turned and continued leading the Ryoko Travelers west, towards what he hoped was the Hikari Kingdom.
And so they walked on.
Free's best friend's family quit the walk. They left the travelers and built a home where the enemy would bypass them and they could be safe.
The further they walked, the more members they lost.
Free felt pity for them when they first reached the kingdoms. They were majestic, towering into the sky like pillars of glory.
"You have children?" the Hikari king demanded. "Show them."
Free, along with various others of his friends, stepped forward. "You will be brought to the Anzen to learn and grow up, and then you will train your best to become a warrior."
And that was it. Free's days of traveling were over.
He hadn't been at the Anzen a week before an excited eight-year-old bounced up to him. "I'm Valt!" he chirped. "Who are you? Why haven't I seen you before? What's your name? How old are you?"
Free blinked, startled. "I'm Free De La Hoya. I come with a group of travelers from the east, and we've traveled for years to get here. I'm eleven."
"Cool!" Valt shouted.
A nearby boy covered his ears. "Don't shout."
"Sorry Shu!" Valt yelled even louder.
He has a habit for yelling, doesn't he? Free thought, slinging his pack over his shoulder. "I've gotta go. Where do I sleep?"
"Over there," Shu said, pointing to a room marked "SECONDARY". Free pursed his lips. Would he rather be in that room or the room marked "NORMAL"? He guessed he didn't have a choice.
"This the Anzen?" he guessed.
"It is," Valt said. "Welcome to the group."
