"You know, it's never the common people that are the problem." She commented idly, flipping a knife from one hand to another. He chuckled, used to her machinations.
"We both know that isn't right."
"Or is it?" She questioned, pointing the blade at the other assassin.
"It's not what we were taught." He sighed, stepping forward.
"Who knows what they were teaching us." She mumbled, before saying in a much louder voice, "You should know by now that we can't rely on what they taught us."
"Even so, they raised us. They have their claws in every government, every organization, every company across this entire continent. Wouldn't they know?"
"Still so naive." She shook her head, turning away from him so that she didn't have to see his disappointed face.
"At least I'm not the one going on murderous rampages." He scoffed, crossing his arms as his stance shifted.
"That really doesn't matter because what you're saying isn't applicable." She hissed, stabbing a finger at him.
"What, you had a reason for killing almost a hundred people?" He threw his hands up, turning to stare at her incredulously.
"Yes."
"What."
"You heard me." She bit out, tucking the knife away somewhere in her body armor.
"So you had a reason?" He stepped back in shock, adrenaline racing through his veins.
"And here I thought you knew me. I always have a plan."
"Y'know, you do. But half the time they don't work so forgive me for doubting you every once and a while."
"You've got a point there." She ran a hand through her hair, picking at the few loose strands. "I can't tell you much, but I can tell you that each and every one of those people were major underground contributors to the war effort."
"How is it that you always find these things?"
"No clue. Now if you'll excuse me, I have work to do." He moved forward and enclosed her in a warm embrace. She sighed, melting into the hug.
"You stay alive out there." He whispered into her hair.
"You know I can't make that promise." She whispered back, feeling her hands tremble slightly as she clung ever closer. Come morning, the sunrise would be dyed red with the blood of her victims.
But for now, she could rest.
For these few seconds, neither of them were going anywhere.
And in that instant, they were safe.
