Why was there wind in an abandoned theater?
To be completely honest, Kania didn't care. But there was something familiar in the wind that made her pause.
Was that laughter? She couldn't tell if this was a song of sorrow or joy.
Music started echoing around the ruined hallways, slowly but surely guiding her to the last jewel of the decrepit theater.
Oh heavens, that stage. Just looking at it made her heart flutter.
Kania would never get the chance to perform on such a grand stage again, not after the accident.
"Let's not worry about the accident." She murmured aloud to herself, starting when she heard a familiar tone start to echo through the auditorium.
"Love, I'd prefer if we never mention that again." That voice... What was going on? Kania shook herself to dispel the chills running down her spine.
Something just wasn't right here. This entire place felt... off, for lack of a better word.
The wisps of laughter (and was that cheering?) reverberating down the walls were getting stronger. She could almost hear the strains of orchestral music underneath them, with the light pattering of feet upon the polished wood of the stage.
Something drew her to the edge of the stage, staring out over the scuffed surface. Usable, but Kania didn't trust it.
"Come on now, moments like these don't last forever." Kania jerked out of her stupor, frantically glancing around the stage. No, it couldn't be. "And if it is?"
She whirled around to face a misty cloud of light, echoing with the same voice she'd heard before. A figure emerged from the fog, holding out a hand like Aryin always did. A kind, sly smile fit itself over her face, matching with a pair of bright eyes.
Kania shuddered before yanking the figure in for a hug.
Heavens, she'd missed this. The warm feeling all around her (why was Aryin still so tall?) with a hint of apple cinnamon spice floating in the air.
Kania pulled back for a split second before pressing her lips to Aryin's in a desperate kiss, chasing the feeling that had been missing those long months. Aryin kissed back just as desperately, pulling Kania ever closer.
The music in the background started to swell. A familiar melody that both of them had fond memories of. Their first performance as a pair, before everything happened.
Muscle memory took over as the first strain reached its peak. The two moved like twin streams of flame; twining around one another but never really touching.
The stage creaked beneath Kania's weight, but neither paid it much attention. Their focus was on one another, and the dance that they shared.
Kania saw speckles of misty light on the floor, fitting with the droplets of tears that streamed from her own eyes. The music swelled to a crescendo as the two finally met for a split second.
Chests heaving, they leaped back into movement the second a cymbal crash rang out. Aryin left a wake of glowing particles when she moved, flowing like streams. Kania saw them in tiny moments whenever her head spun around to face the opposite side of the stage.
The music started to fade out, the cheering growing to a massive height. Kania all but fell into Aryin's arms, sobbing her heart out. Aryin placed kisses on her forehead, holding her the best she could.
The stage creaked one final time before collapsing into itself, leaving behind two spirits.
Forever dancing for a crowd no one else could see.
Eternally bound to the stage that might've never existed.
Kania and Aryin, dancing together until the end of time. And they were content with that.
