The mirror was hidden in a cave. It would have been impossible to find if it weren't for the sign outside the cave. The sign had read, "Congrats, you've made it to the top! Mirror in here."
Avelle and Bradley rushed into the cave. The mirror was there. It was a handheld mirror that was displayed on a Disney-styled pedestal. There was even a spotlight on top of the mirror.
Bradley took the mirror first. "I don't get it," he said. "It's broken."
"What do you mean?" asked Avelle, "Don't you see your soulmate looking back at you?"
"No. I don't. I just see myself," said Bradley.
"He's broken", said a tiny voice at the back of Avelle's head. "Dying alone. Just like you."
"Let me see that," said Avelle as she took the mirror for herself. She looked in the mirror. She saw herself staring back. She gazed harder. Maybe her soulmate would materialize if she stared harder. No such luck.
"Broken", said that voice again.
Avelle was enraged. She tried to throw the mirror. Bradley caught it.
"Woah!" he cried, "Don't smash historic artifacts! I'm sure there's a perfectly reasonable explanation for this mirror. Maybe it needs new batteries?"
"There is no reasonable explanation!" yelled Avelle, "We are broken! All of our friends will grow up, get married, have children and forsake everyone else that they once thought were important! We won't. We don't have a soulmate! We have no completion! We will die alone."
Avelle stormed off. Bradley continued to poke at the mirror, searching for his 'reasonable explanation'. Avelle ran out of the cave and towards the part of the mountain that looked like a forest. The trees would shield her from her problems. Maybe she could climb one of those trees. That will get her farther away from her problems.
She spent at least ten minutes trying to climb that tree. She stayed up there for at least fifteen minutes.
"Maybe," she thought, "Bradley and I can pretend to be each other's soulmate. Then Eris would believe that we had each successfully completed the quest. We won't be completely alone. I mean, we'd have each other. We would only need to forsake everyone else. No matter, they'd abandoned us quicker since we are unlovable."
It was a perfect plan. Of course Bradley would agree. But as she was climbing down the tree, a vine net ensnared her.
