Nanhi Si Jaan (Samaina)

Chapter 7

The next morning was brighter and much more beautiful. It brought along a sense of newness in everything. Naina woke up with sunrays formed a trajectory into the ward. She found Suman sleeping and snuggling onto her.

Naina's Voiceover

Kitni pyaari si bacchi hai Suman. Kyu iske hisse mein itne dukh likhe hain aapne Kanha jii? Iski maasoomiyat pr kisi ko kyu taras ni aata?

She wiped her misty eyes and carefully pulled her arm, and moved away. Stepping out she witnessed Sameer whose face appeared really calm while he slept on the couch. Somewhere in herself, Naina felt guilty for he had to sleep in such a condition, that too on the couch. She covered him with a sheet, and headed off to the Staff's washroom to freshen up. By the time she returned, Sameer was already up, and had freshened up too. Together they went inside the ward to check Suman if she was awake, and they were really mesmerised to see that little angel sleeping peacefully. They decided not to disturb her and headed to the hospital canteen to grab their first meal. While having that, there was a peaceful silence running through the duo, though their minds were actually flooded with questions but they were calm, and had actually reached the pinnacle of understanding. Well, this is something perfection should be defined as. Instead of bombarding questions and making each other comfortable, silence should be understood and personal space must be respected too.

After they were done with breakfast, they got poha packed for Suman and went back to her. Sameer caressed her hair as she slowly opened her eyes and woke up with a weak smile playing on her face. Truly, children are reflections of God! They know how to bring peace out of every situation. Soon, Sameer left for home as per Naina's words, for he also needed some rest and he was much convinced with Naina staying with Suman. And Preeti would also be there till lunch time as she had got an important coverage for the morning. Suman also needed to get a sponge bath and her bandages changed. Naina went on with the process quietly and carefully, while Suman was heartily happy with the gift god was giving her!
She finally spoke,

Suman : Naina aunty, aap sacchi me bht acchi ho. Papa hamesha mera dhyaan rakhte hain, kyuki wo toh mere papa hain na, par aapse toh mera real wala rishta bhi nhi, fir bhi aap mera itna dhyaan rkh rhi ho. Thank you!

Naina was awestruck with Suman's words, though she responded :

Naina : Aisa nahi hai baby, ki humara koi rishta nhi hai, mai aapke papa ki dost huu na, toh mai aapki bhi dost hui. Aur dost toh ek dusre ka hamesha dhyaan rakhte hain na?

Suman: Toh aap hamesha mera dhyaan rakhoge na?

Naina : Haan baccha. Par aap ese kyu puch rahe ho?

Suman : Mujhe darr lagta hai, aap bhi mumma jese mujhe chhor ke toh nhi jaoge na?

Naina : Nhi betu, Kabhi nhi.

Suman : Pinky promise karo

Naina : Okay baba, pinky promise! Ab khush?

Suman giggled and nodded, while Naina went and grabbed the box of poha for her.
She fed her nicely while they kept on chatting. Later, Suman was given a few mild pain killers and was put to rest. Naina had other patients to look after, hence she headed off to work.
It was not long after Naina got busy in work that she heard a lady yelling at the reception. To find out who it was and calm the situation, she hurried to the reception.

Lady (yelling at the receptionist) : What the hell! Hospital hai ya koi remand home! Jab maine kaha mujhe meri bacchi se milna hai, matlab milna hai! Ab mujhe iske liye tumlogo ki permission leni padegi?

Naina(approaching her) : Ma'am please calm down. Yeh hospital hai aapka ghar nahi. Yaha aur bhi patients hain jinhe aapke cheekhne se takleef ho rhi hai.

Lady: Oh! Toh ab ek do kaudi ki doctor..

She turned back to see who it was, and was stunned to find Naina there.

Naina : Sunaina!? Tum yaha? Kyu? I mean kese?

Sunaina : Ohh! Toh aakhir kaar tum bhi Mumbai aa hee gayi na apne aashiq ke paas! Sahi hai. Par abhi apne stupid staff members se kaho ki mujhe meri bachhi se milne dein.

Naina (yelling at her) : Pehli baat toh mai Mumbai kyu aayi, is baat se tumhara koi lena dena nahi, aur dusri baat yaha tumhari koi bachhi nahi hai! Jao tum yaha se.

Sunaina : Miss Naina Aggarwal, shyd aap bhuul rahi hain. Kal subhe Suman ko yaha admit kiya gya h and for God’s sake she's my daughter!! Mujhe usse milna hai.

Naina : Badi jaldi yaad aa gyi tumhe that she is your daughter! Kal jab wo bechaari khoon se sane kapdo mein yaha laayi gyi thi tab tumhe yaad nahi tha na that she's your daughter! Jab us bacchi ko kal khoon ki zarurat thi tb bhi tumhe yaad nhi aaya that she's your daughter! Arre tumhe toh chaar saal pehle bhi kaha yaad aaya tha, Jo abhi yaad aaega. Aur aaj ekdum se jagat maata bannkr yha pahuch gyi jhooti mamta lekar! Ghinn aati hai tumpar!
Tum aurat ke naam pr hee kalank ho Sunaina!

Sunaina : Tumhe toh main..!

.. And she raised her hand to slap Naina but a masculine hand held her back tightly.

Sameer: Sunaina! Apni hadd mein raho!

Sunaina : Ohh! Toh aa gya tumhara hero tumhe bachane. Tum mujhe kya Hadd mein rehne ko keh rhe ho Sameer? Iss Naina ne bhare hospital mein meri bezzti ki hai! Par nahii ise tum kaha kuch kahoge? Girlfriend Jo thehri.

Sameer : Mai aurton par haath nahi uthata iska matlab yeh nahi hai ki tum is baat ka najaayaz faayeda uthao. Chup chaap apna boriya bistar sameto aur yaha se chalti bano. Warna tumhare liye toh bilkul bhi acha nahi hoga.

Sunaina : Allelee le mai toh darr gyii! Hehehe

Sameer tightened his fists as his anger reached its pinnacle. Naina couldn't stop herself and grabbed Sunaina's hand tightly, and dragged her away to the main gate. After a lot of arguments, Sunaina was finally sent away. But she warned Naina that she'll be back with legal orders to meet Suman. Here, Sameer was already inside the ward to look after an already disturbed Suman. He tried his best to calm her down while Naina rushed in too.

Naina : Suman, kya hua bacche? Aapko headache ho rha h?

Suman : Haan aunty. Bht dukh raha h scchi mein.

Naina slowly injected her with a pain killer which soon gave her relief. After a few minutes she looked upto Samaina and asked :

Suman : Mumma aayi thi kya? Maine unki aawaz suni par nurse didi ne mujhe bahar jaane se mana kiya tha isliye mai unhe dekhne nhi aa paayi. Bolo na papa, mumma aayi thi kya mujhse milne?

Both Sameer and Naina went silent upon hearing this. Sameer felt helpless as he was well aware of how Suman missed a mother's love, and how depressed she may feel when she'd know that they didn't let her meet her own mother. But to protect her was necessary too.
Here Naina was a bit disturbed as she could very well understand Suman's condition, where she was needy of a mother. But to make her understand why they had sent Sunaina back was a tougher task.
They were perplexed while Suman looked at them with expectant eyes.
