“Help. Help me please.” I called out as they both rushed to our side.
“You two shouldn't be outside.” One spat out suspiciously but I angrily threw back. “Well, if you guards were doing your work well, the man wouldn’t have hurt this girl and tried to sneak her into his car.”
The other guard narrowed his eyes. “Which man?” He asked.
I gave a rough description of one of the clients I used to service, and then watched as one guard took of towards the entrance, radioing other guards to prevent the target from escaping.
“Help me with her, would you? I honestly can't tell if he’s breathing.”
I admonished and scooted to the side as he knelt down to give Edina what I'm guessing was a CPR.
That was my chance. Summoning all the energy I could gather, I hit him hardly on the head and watched as he collapsed to the ground in a heap. Edina scrambled to her feet and we raced to the gate, but not before I had searched his pocket and taken his gun, some money and his mobile phone. The gate was quite difficult to open and that delayed us for a bit and it was just enough time for the guard to gain a little bit of consciousness and stagger towards us, stabbing a knife into Edina’s stomach before I could knock him out again. I began to cry as I held my sister by the hand and we raced into the night.
We ran for a very long time, till Edina began to feel weak, her shirt soaked in blood. I looked around, checking our location out.The surrounding was like some kind of thicket and I managed to find us a place to hide so I could assess Edina’s wound. It wasn’t a deep cut like I had feared after I had soaked a handkerchief and cleaned up the blood as much as I could.
We couldn’t stay here for long too, as they would have realised we had escaped by now and would be looking for us. I needed to get Edina to a hospital, but I wasn’t stupid. I knew that would be the first place they’d be looking for us at especially since I didn’t kill the guard who hurt her.
I had only been able to knock him out, meaning he'd tell them what he did when he came to.
Right now, I had to get us to town, and then buy some spirit or even alcohol, and bandage, so I could disinfect the wound and keep it from festering.
I could hear very loud music, and I knew then that we were close. Edina begged me to allow her rest a bit before we continued and I obliged.
By the time we made it to the town, I was overwhelmed with at the sheer size of the crowd, there was music at every corner and I felt much relieved. There was no way we would be found now. A kind stranger gave us directions to a pharmacy nearby and I got everything I’d need for Edina’s wound. She sat waiting for me at the alley... it was better not to be seen together.
I dressed her wound and then we sat there, finally taking everything in. We had done it! God, it felt so good to be free. It hurt to think about the other girls, I was going to get them out of there, but first, we had to think about what to do with ourselves first.
We were definitely not going back to any orphanage, not on my watch!
I now had time to properly ask her what had happened after all three of us had been separated... You know, the three of them were actually kept in the same orphanage before they moved to their foster homes, or at least that was what the social worker had told me, but according to Edina she had also been sent to a different orphanage, thus she had no idea what had happened with Pamela and Kwame after.
I was very worried. Who knew what had happened to them, I mean... knowing my experience with foster homes, I honestly feared the worst but I hoped against hope that, they were being well taken care of.
They were so young and helpless, and had no one they knew around them. God, I hoped they were safe.
