Chapter Ten

It was six a.m and Ava was still asleep. Edith didn't blame her, however, since she had been kidnapped by Moriarty, even if it was for a day and a half. Edith got out of bed with a major headache and sores all over her body. She struggled to walk over to the bathroom and she looked at herself in the mirror.

Her black hair was in a frizz and would be impossible to brush, and she had a black eye forming over her swelling right eye. There was crusted blood all over her body, especially around her nose. Edith closed her eyes and let out a groan of frustration.

She started the shower and felt immediately relaxed when the scalding hot water soothed her aching muscles. Edith washed her hair at least two times to get blood out of it and to make it smell less like she rolled in mud. When she was done with her hair, half of her conditioner bottle was used and a whole bottle of shampoo.

Edith got out and wrapped a towel around herself and looked at the mirror to see any improvements. The blood was gone from her nose and her hair was now dripping wet, but at least better than the frizz.

She walked out of the bathroom and into her bedroom to check the clock, 6:20. She had to be at work at seven. Edith put on skinny blue jeans and a faded AC/DC shirt. She slipped on her leather jacket and black nike shoes. After her hair was dried, she put it in a fishtail braid.

Edith left the bedroom to see Ava standing next to the couch, looking like a zombie. "Hey," she slurred to Edith. "How you doin?" Edith replied to her. Ava shrugged, "Like I just been run over by a steamroller. I probably don't feel as bad as you do, though." Edith put a hand on Ava's shoulder, "Rest. It will help you."

"That's what you said when Mom and Dad died."
"It helped, didn't it?" Edith raised an eyebrow in a quirky way. Ava flopped back on the couch and put her face in her pillow. "Shut up," she said in a muffled voice.

Edith chuckled and left for work, "I'll be back at three."

Edith pushed the door open only to be bombarded by a long of people in Speedy's. She rolled her eyes and groaned, today was going to suck. Edith took off her jacket and went behind the register. Cecilia was in the back cooking with two other people, Violet and Samuel. Arthur was in his office as usual.

Edith took orders until eleven, which was her lunch break. She walked away from the register and grabbed her jacket when the door to Arthur's office opened and Arthur exited it. He looked at Edith and said, "Is the coast clear?"

Edith looked around the restaurant and saw that Cecilia and Violet had left together(seeing as they were a couple) and that Samuel was nowhere to be seen. The crowd of customers had dwindled significantly and pretty soon, the last customer had paid and left.

Edith nodded and Arthur opened the door wider, to let a girl out of his office. Edith rolled her eyes for what was like the tenth time today and said, "Arthur this is a place of work."

"I own this place, Newbie," he replied. Arthur was leaning on the doorframe with his arms folded. Edith looked at him, he had grown a five o clock shadow and his golden hair was a ruffled mess. "Okay then," Edith was about to leave when Arthur said, "Where are you going?"

"On my break, like I usually do," was her reply. Arthur walked over to the coat rack and grabbed his jacket, "Lunch?" Edith nodded, "You're paying." She opened the door and left it open for Arthur. He rolled his eyes and whined, "I always do."

"It's chivalrous," Edith stated as they walked across the road. Arthur shook his head, "Chivalry is dead. But I'll oblige to pay, for your sakes." Edith smiled, "I knew you would give in."
