•Bailey's POV•
I think those eyes belonged to Nash.
I think I was staring too long, but Nash just smiled at me. I must have looked weird- my eyes big, or my mouth gaping or something- because he started laughing.
"What's so funny?" I defend.
"Nothing," he smiles, "who are you anyways?" He asks more serious.
"It's something and I just moved in to the house beside yours," I respond.
"Cool," he says.
"Nash why were you laughing?" I ask again.
"It's just the way you stared at me. What were you even looking at?" He starts laughing again.
"You- your eyes I mean. Have you seen them?" I ask and join his laughter.
"Yes I've seen my eyes before," he laughs.
We just stand and stare at each other. He seems nice actually. Maybe he'll be my first friend in North Carolina.
"Um excuuuuuse me? Are we gonna play horses or not?" Skylynn asks.
"Why don't we ride horses instead of play horses? Now how does that sound?" I ask her and smile.
Her face immediately brightens, "yes yes yes yes!" She jumps and shouts.
"No no no no," Nash protests.
"Why not?" I ask. Why wouldn't she be able to ride with me...
"Well Sky we need to ask mom first.." he starts.
Skylynn bolts down the stairs and rushes into the kitchen. Nash and I run after her.
"Mom mom mom I wanna ride her horses!" Sky shouts and points at me.
Elizabeth laughs.
"Sky it's a little late today. Maybe tomorrow if it's warm," Elizabeth says.
Elizabeth looks at me.
"I didn't know you had horses. Where do you keep them?" She asks.
"Oh yeah my stepdad was driving them to the new barn where we're keeping them. I don't remember what it's called, but it's jus out of town on Clintonville Road," I answer.
"Oh I see," she says.
"Sky I can show you pictures if you want," I tell her.
"Yes yes yes!" She runs back up the stairs and I follow her. She walks into a huge room. It was pink and white with stuffed animals everywhere. There was a swing and a horse painted on the wall. I'd kill for this room when I was her age.
I sit on the floor next to the swim she was on. I open my picture album and she snatches my phone. Sky swipes the pictures to the right and she smiles the whole time.
"You're horse is really pretty," she says, not breaking her smile.
I take my phone from her.
"Here," I say. I show her a different picture. A picture of me at a horse show. I won first place at a barrel race. That was the best day of my life. My smile was huge.
"Did you win?" Skylynn asks.
"Yep and I can show you the video," I tell her.
She smiles and nods.
This was the time I beat my "bully" at the show. I was so happy. The horse I was riding, Jerry, is an Ottb (off the track thoroughbred), and is considered a run down horse to her and her friends.
Skylynn stared at my phone and smiled.
"That horse is really fast," she says. She sounded out of breath, must have been for emphasis.
Skylynn continues to look at my pictures when I hear a noise from the hallway. It sounded like it was coming up the stairs.
"Keep looking at my pictures, Sky, I'll be right back," I tell her.
I walk out of her room and start toward the stairs. I look over the edge and see another boy trying to carry a duffle bag up the stairs.
"Do you need any help?" I ask.
"Sure. Who are you though?" He asks.
I smile. "I'm your new neighbor. I'm Bailey," I say.
"I'm Hayes," he says.
I nod and reach for his bag. It was pretty heavy.
"What do you got in here, a body?" I laugh.
"No; football pads and a helmet," he laughs back.
"Ohhh you play football?" I ask.
"Noooooooo," he says sarcastically.
"Just trying to stay a conversation, buddy," I laugh.
"Ew Haasss is here," a voice at the top of the stairs says.
"Ew Trash Nash," Hayes replies.
"Haasss? Trash Nash? What kind of nicknames are these?" I laugh.
"Like you don't have an embarrassing nickname," Nash says.
"Actually I don't," I snort.
"Well I'll have to make you one- although Bailey seems like a more difficult name.." Nash starts.
"Ha," I say.
"Hayeeeesssssss!" Skylynn shouts and runs toward Hayes.
"Awe. I wish my sister was like that," I pout.
"You have a sister?" Hayes asks.
"Older; off limits," I laugh.
"Wait a minute.. How old are you?" Hayes asks.
"I'm too old for you," I snap.
"No I mean what's your age," he says.
"I'm fifteen," I answer.
Hayes looks at Nash and wiggles his eyebrows.
"Am I missing something?" I ask.
"Nashty is sixteen," he hints.
"Yes Hayes she knows," Nash says and pushes Hayes. They start pushing each other and then start tackling each other. Which leaves me to break it up.
I grab the lower hairs on their heads and pull them up.
"Stop fighting," I say and let go.
Nash rubs the back of his head.
"We're guys. It's what we do," Nash defends.
"Well my sister and I used to beat each other up till this happened," I say and push back my hair. I show them a scar along my hairline.
"My sister pushed me into a wooden picnic table.. And then I ended up at the hospital.
"Ouch," Hayes says.
"Yeah," I say.
Nash pulls out his phone and opens it.
"What time is it?" I ask.
"Almost seven," he answers.
"Oh I should probably get going," I say. Hayes nods an lugs his bag into his room and closes the door. I walk into Skylynn's room and grab my phone off her bed.
"Bye Sky. Maybe we'll ride tomorrow," I suggest.
She smiles, "bye Bailey."
I walk toward the stairs when someone grabs my arm. I spin around and look into Nash's eyes.
"Are you coming back tomorrow?" He asks.
"Sky and I were gonna to the barn," I say.
"Okay," he says and turns to go into his room. I walk down the stairs and hear the knob click.
