( ⬆️ April : Bryan )
"You'll be marrying .." Mother said with caution as she slowly distances herself from my bedroom door fearing for the worst.
"Marrying?"
I laugh from the disbelief, Marrying? Me? Only eighteen, a to-be-graduate, has to ask permission to drive the family car, I only have two hundred ninety-three dollars saved for college, And she expects me to get married? I could feel anger swirl in my stomach, my earlobes heat up from the fumes of smoke bubbling up my throat. I couldn't keep it in.
"Marriage? As in husband and— wife?" I shook my head, "Mother marriage? Is this some kind of joke? Does dad know about this? I rarely leave the house and you expect me to get married?" I felt my lungs inflate and deflate in seconds from the drumming up of fear and confusion. "Did you sell me off or something?" Mother shook her head, "Good heavens no! How could I sell you off to someone?" "It seems like you're doing it now! What's the reason behind this Marriage? Huh? Debt?"
"Yes April! Your father and I are in debt with our superiors! They have a nice son around your age only a few months older. He's a musician and I thought you two would get along." So that was her excuse? Because we both like music? "Do this for me and your father please. The house will be taken from us if you don't do this. Your father will be discharged immediately if you come through beautiful. Please.." I could see the hurt in Mothers eyes, how she had the chance to see Dad again was a hope in her future.
Dad is a Military General he has served since he was fifteen following the death of his grandparents. Earning the position as a general was a blessing to him after decades of hard work. But his life has been put in danger numerous times before, he rarely see him maybe twice a year or even once for the holidays. My dad's father was an Army General as well that's where my dad's desire of serving sprouted from. I've even considered joining the list of militant family members but dad always encourages me not to sign. "It's too dangerous April."
"I'm going to change." I sigh closing the door before sitting down on my bed pulling on my own hair from the frustration. "Thank you." A whisper sighs from the opposite side of the door. I couldn't believe I would be going through with this, I could only stare at the picture of her smiling face that stood proudly on my nightstand. She's the only one I could fully trust in this house, sending a rapid text to Evelyn about this whole situation only to be bombarded by phone calls and text messages several minutes later.
"How is it that you're getting married?!" Evelyn screams through the phone making my eardrums hurt, "It's for my dad—" "Are you gonna drop out? You gonna be a teen mom? How did this happen? There has to be another way April, you can't go through with this—" A knock was pounded on my door as Bryan walks by telling to hurry up. "I have to, I don't have another choice." Evelyn laughs, "Fuck yea you do, it's saying no to this whole thing. You can live with me! We can move in together after graduation. Don't do this April."
"I'll call you when I get home."
"April wait—" Mother was getting impatient as she was hitting the car's horn multiple times. A black sweater with blue overalls and sneakers, nothing fancy just plain casual. I was too busy thinking about the abrupt changes to my near future, that the fifteen minute car ride turns into five. "You'll be fine." Cara assures noting my sudden change in mood. I felt nervous sprout in the pit of stomach and confusion fills my lungs as breathing was becoming a harder task to accomplish. "April you're not going to leave the house right?" Since when did Bryan care about my presence? "I don't want too." That's all I could say since my future was being decided for me.
The luxury hotel was coming into view as we approach the glass sliding doors, people walking in and out of the business with hushed voices and silent smiles. "It's too fancy." Bryan sighs sticking to my side, I was worried these would my last moments with these three. Mother and Cara approach the front receptionist as Bryan and I wonder around the lobby taking in the beautiful artwork and stunning displays of fountains and lights. Women's heels click across the marble tiles as they gracefully glide across the lobby. Men in formal suits checking the time as they make their way around. "I don't want you to get married." Bryan whines out of the blue, "You're the only one that is with me everyday." Bryan being two years younger than me we've always been together even when we didn't want to be together.
"I don't want to either, but I have too." I sigh in defeat. Bryan hangs his head as he takes a seat on the cushioned chairs folding his hand showing the nervous in him as well.
"Just don't forget me."
