“My girlfriend’s getting suspicious,” I said as I sat in my little corner chair.

I was sitting in Dr. Kennedy’s office the next day in between classes. She had to work on paperwork almost the whole time, but she still promised that she would talk to me about why this had to be such a big secret. You know, other than the whole being married thing.

“I’m sorry to hear that. Luckily for me my husband doesn’t pay a lot of attention to things outside of work.”

Well that didn’t sound so fun either. I felt kind of bad. At least I could say that I knew Amber cared.

“So about your husband, if you like women, why are you married to him?”

She talked as she continued to work. I listened carefully as she told me about her super religious family. Apparently they once found out that one of her cousins was gay and disowned him. He was never allowed back in the house and his parents had told him that as far as they were concerned, they didn’t have a son.

Dr. Kennedy’s parents were just like that. They actually agreed with the way that his parents had handled things. She was afraid to tell them all that she was interested in women for fear of the same thing happening.

However, I feel as though I should point out that this isn’t one of those times where she married her husband just to make her family happy. She really did love him in fact, she was one of those rare adults that was actually bisexual. I say rare, because I’ve personally never met anyone that didn’t eventually end up coming out as all out gay, not because I believed that bisexual people didn’t exist.

I couldn’t blame her for hiding. I was lucky to have a mom that accepted me for exactly who I was. It was a shame that not all parents in the world could be like that. She sighed and stopped talking for a moment so she could really focus on something.

I stood up and walked over to sit on the other side of the L-shaped desk, right next to her. She looked up at me, confused and leaned forward to take her hand in mine.

“I don’t think you need to worry about your parents anymore, Dr. Ken….”

“Jenae.”

“Oh. Okay. I mean Jenae. You’re 36, you’re married with a child, and you live in your own house. They can’t do anything to you now.”

“Well all of that is true, I’m still very close to my mother… if she found out….”

“She should love you for who you are,” I cut it. “You’re her daughter.”

“Yes. She should, but she won’t.”

I let go of her hand and slid off the desk so I could wrap my arms around her shoulders and hug her tight. She leaned away from me, which made me let go, but she had a smile on her face at the same time, so I felt a little better knowing I made her happier.

“What is it?” I asked as she simply stared at me for a moment, thinking.

“Just thinking. We really need to find somewhere else to get together. It’s going to start looking a little suspicious if I have you in my office on a daily basis for.”

She was right. It would start to look a little weird after a while, but where would we go. She had a family at home and I had a mother who practically never left my house. We couldn’t go out in public, because someone would surely recognize her and realize that she’s a married woman on a date with her 19 year old student.

There was a dead silence in the room as we both tried to think of solutions to this new dilemma. At some point I started to wonder if it was really worth it to have to sneak around so much. That thought didn’t last too long though. Of course it was worth it.

“I have an idea.”

I looked up from the spot on the floor that I had been staring at.

“What is it?” I asked.

“Well this weekend my daughter’s class is taking a camping trip to observe nature for their science lesson. My husband is going to be one of the chaperones since I said I was too busy to go.”

“But… you aren’t busy?”

“No. I just wanted to distress this weekend.”

I smiled. That sounded perfect. I would be able to spend the weekend with her as long as I had a legitimate sounding lie to give to my mom about where I’d be. I could just say that I was at Lesley’s house. I was sure she’d cover for me in case my mom wanted to check up on me at any point.

“That sounds perfect,” I said, maybe with a little too much excitement in my voice.

Dr. Kennedy smiled.

*Knock, knock, knock*

Dr. Kennedy stood up to answer the door as I went quietly back to my corner. When the door opened I heard a familiar voice that made my heart practically stop beating.

“Hi, Dr. Kennedy,” Amber said cheerfully. “I was told that you are my academic advisor. I was wondering if I could maybe talk to you for a moment.”

Dr. Kennedy looked at me and I nodded as I started to pick my bag up off the ground. I was getting out of there as fast as I could.

“Uh… yeah. Sure.” Dr. Kennedy smiled at Amber. “Miss Royce was just leaving.”

Amber popped her head in and smiled really big when she saw me. I felt terribly guilty. Terribly. There were almost no words to express how guilty I felt. She was smiling at me while I was in the office of the woman I was cheating on her with. This couldn’t have gotten any more awkward.

Amber walked in and I moved out of her way. She sat down in the little corner chair as I waved good-bye to her and told Dr. Kennedy that I would see her in class the next day. After that I was gone. I needed to go find somewhere to calm myself down after that close call.

Dr. Kennedy was Amber’s advisor. Why? Why of all the advisors in the entire school that she could get, did she happen to get paired up with Dr. Kennedy? It was like… my worst nightmare. It brought her one step close to being able to catch us. I sighed and slumped down against the wall at the end of the hall.
