Chapter 138 Spoilers!!
4 years later
Jean stood with Connie, arms around each others' backs in silence, as they watched Mikasa, Pieck, and Levi fly away together.
"So... this is the end." Connie spoke, breaking the silence between them.
Connie's words brought him back to that moment four years ago, his last moments with you. "For us... They're leaving it to us." He could barely hear the background noise, despite the commotion going on. There was a certain ringing in his ears. "That's the scouts' way," he quoted you.
There was never a day Jean didn't think about you. You were constantly on his mind. Whenever he got tired, when he thought of giving up, he remembered that promise he made. He kept on fighting, like you did in your last moments, for you. He was afraid of disappointing you, letting you down, so he fought, up until the very end.
Jean felt weirdly content and he wondered if this is how you felt when you were dying, knowing the end was near. His mind was filled with memories of you and he brought his left hand up to his chest. He grasped the necklace he took from your corpse all those years ago.
"Do you remember Jean?" Connie shook him out of his gaze as he began to talk. "During graduation..."
"Yeah..."
"We ended up saving the world... Because of you."
Jean smiled, he thought of you once again, "I tried to keep my promise, my love, I really did."
And everything went dark.
