Regrettably, Cornelia took a can of the cheap beer that Danny offered her and the day didn't stop at one. Three beers and a completed project later, the two girls sat giggling on Danny's backyard patio. Cornelia even tried one of Danny's menthol cigarettes, but could only stomach a quarter before coughing up a lung and tossing the remnants to Danny. With a chuckle, Cornelia elbowed Danny in the side. "I can't believe I thought you were a boy at one point."
"Oh believe it, baby." Danny elbowed her back, "I might as well be one. I don't like boys, but I am not into girls either, and I am as flat as a board."
"Don't be like that-"
"It is true. If I ever want to hide from my sister, all I got to do is stand sideways with a lampshade on my head." Danny interrupted and finished the remaining cigarette that Cornelia couldn't handle. "Then again, you wouldn't be the first."
"Really, does half of Heatherfield think you are a dude?" asked Cornelia with a raised eyebrow, expecting Danny to laugh it off just like she had the rest of their conversation.
"Well, there is this Matt kid whose grandfather I am workin' for. Dude honestly thought I was a boy until the other day. I nearly flashed him at the pet shop to prove I am a chick."
"No way, you got Will's old job?" Cornelia asked, the beer having coated her brain in cotton and loosened her tongue. "You do know she only took that job so she could have a chance to flirt with Matt, right. Do you...like...got a crush on Matt too?"
"You got potatoes in your ears or somethin'? I just told you that I am not into dudes or chicks. Besides, why would I be into a guy that stares at me with those creeper peepers?" replied Danny as she stared out at the withered yard while drinking another beer.
"True, Matt never rebound from Will dumping him, you know."
"What you quackin' about? Will didn't dump Matt; he dumped her and she just moved on. Ain't nothin' wrong with that." Danny had a notion where this conversation was going, it was the same sinking feeling one would get when seeing the first dip of a rollercoaster.
"Yeah, she did; right into the monster's bed."
"Who gives a fuck who Red diddles? Honestly, I don't know why you are getting so worked up about it." Replied Danny and crushed her empty can against her forehead.
"I care because we were guardians!" replied Cornelia, beginning to get worked up again. "We were meant to protect Meridian and all portals connecting our world with it from evil like him. How are we supposed to protect Meridian and any portal connecting our world if we just end up fucking them? Besides, she was 14 when they married and he must be 30 at this point!"
"He is 21 now and she married into a culture where that shit is normal and completely legal. Secondly, if her method worked, why bitch about it?" asked Danny as she opened another can of beer; it was her fifth of the day.
"I am pissed because her dumb hormones endanger the safety of the Heart and she got the man I love banned from his home!" Cornelia's voice shrieked as she slumped against the banister of Danny's patio, feeling as though she finally met someone to who she could vent her frustrations.
"Yeah, I heard about that and it sucks, but Caleb shouldn't have tried to poison Phobos with some cheap love potion shit."
"He was trying to free Meridian from tyranny without risking his own life too much. How could he enjoy the fruits of his labor if he got executed for it? Besides, he didn't know it was a love potion." Cornelia tried to reason as she felt her lips grow heavy from the two beers she had. Part of her was surprised how Danny was able to drink nearly a six-pack without showing even the slightest sign of inebriation.
