"a little more, dearest" she begged her daughter "just a little more"
Her father watched her daughter grip the bedsheets beside her, thrashing around in agony as her mother stood before her, pleading the baby to unsheathe itself from her daughters womb.
With one final push her baby was born and wrapped in the cloth of a discarded bed sheet.
"It's a girl" her mother whispered, holding the newborn in her arms as she stood up
"A girl" Katerina breathed "please mother... Let me see her"
"Women, don't!" Her father commanded and her mother stopped short, pulling the baby away from Katerina's reach
"Let me at least hold her once" katerina begged desperately "just once! At least once"
"Forget it. You have disgraced this family" her father spat and She watched as her mother gave her daughter away, handing the poor baby to her heartless father. "Papa please!" Katerina cried out "no, papa... no!"
"No katerina. It's better for her!" Her mother chided, pulling her heartbroken daughter into her arms
"It's better for her" she repeated as katerina fought back
"no, mama, please"
"Let her go... let her go, katerina"
Katerina blinked as soft tears spilled from her brown eyes. she clung onto her mother tightly, willing her pain to depart.
Tears continued to roll down her cheeks as she grasped her mothers arms, wishing her insufferable father would change his mind
