I look at myself in the mirror, my long blue dress hanging off of my shoulders. It's a little too big and kinda makes me look like a twig. Maybe I should just put it back in that tan box and return it to the store. I could just wear something more casual, or...

"Joey, honey." Joyce's voice calls from outside the bathroom door. "Can I come in?"

I flatten out my dress one last time before I say, "yeah. I'm dressed."

The large door whips open and Miss Byers smiles.

"What?" I ask, "is it too much?"

She just shakes her head. "No, no. You look beautiful."

I blush a little bit at the complement and she sits me down in a chair. As she takes the curlers out of my hair, I have to stop myself from touching it. I guess that's a habit at this point, tugging on my hair when I get nervous. I shouldn't be nervous right now though. I should be excited, I'm going to the snow ball. Some girls wait all year for this. They pick out their clothes and order fancy makeup products out of magazines. I've never really thought too much about it though. Maybe that's just because I've never been. Usually I have to go to my moms house the day after winter break starts. I don't get to stick around for the weekend parties. This years different though. Mom decided to take herself, her husband, and my half-brother Ben on a family vacation for Christmas. Naturally, their 'family' doesn't include me. That's okay though, it's not like I wanted to hang out with them anyways.

Before I know it, my hair is styled and some light makeup is applied to my face.

Joyce hands me a paper towel. "Here honey, now just blot your lipstick."

"Huh?" I question.

"You don't know what blotting is?"

I think for a second before shaking my head. "Is it like...paper mache?"

She lets out a laugh.

"Let me show you, Joey." Miss Byers applies a light pink shade to her lips and then breaks off her own paper towel. "You pucker your lips, and then you kiss the end of the towel."
