krishna was sitting near sea of dwarka there he saw children were bored
he asked"what happen to you all?"
They replied"we are bored"
krishna smiled and said"what is today?".
"My mother told that today is mahashivratri"said a girl
"do you know why we celrbrate it?"asked krishna.

Krishna says-
One of the most auspicious festivals of the Hindus, Maha Shivratri is celebrated with great pomp and show, as Hindu communities across the world dedicate this day to Lord Shiva and offer their devotion to the mighty God.  devotees will be seen lining up in front of the Shiv Temples to offer their prayers and also observe a vrator fast. The word ‘Shivratri’ means Lord Shiva and Night; according to Indian mythology, Lord Shiva appeared as the form of Linga, on the midnight of Maha Shivratri.
This auspicious festival holds very high regard for Lord Shiva’s devotees who perform Tandav i.e said to be the cosmic dance that created the universe. Women, especially worship Lord Shiva to pray for a peaceful, happy and successful married life. Unmarried women also observe this fast to get married to a suitable man. This day further signifies the eradication of all sin, greed and negative forces from life, if one utters the name Shiva with utmost dedication and devotion. The purity and sanctity of this festival is an ode to eliminating darkness from everyone’s lives, with the blessing of Lord Shiva.
Devotees take a holy bath in the Ganga river early morning and start observing their fast. They have to take a second bath in the evening before doing the Shivratri puja that should only be done at night. The devotees break the fast the next day after bathing and eat all sorts of fruit, sweets to commemorate the festival.
