"Ok Miss Jisoo, patient Jiwoo was here for a check-up. I just need you to administer him an influenza vaccine and he should be good to go. Can you handle this?" The Doctor said as she gave all the information to Jisoo. Since Jisoo had an LPN (Licenced Practical Nursing) license compared to her classmates, she could do bits of care under her internship.
"Yes, Doctor," Jisoo replied as she took the vaccine kit.
Jisoo knocked on the patient's door. She could hear the poor boy crying in fear and the mother trying to calm him down. Now she knew why the doctor gave her that patient.
"Hello, I'm nurse Jisoo." Jisoo introduced herself with a much softer voice than she was normally using.
"Hello, can we please get this over with, I don't think he can take it anymore," The mother pleaded, she couldn't stand seeing her son in so much distress.
"Of course Miss. Let me just have a word with him." Jisoo said. It was weird to the mother because most nurses would just do their job and leave. Jisoo didn't do that.
"Hey, buddy. Are you scared?" Jisoo asked in a mother-like tone. The boy slowly nodded in response as he started to cry less.
"Would you like a lollipop? Everybody likes those!" Jisoo offered with a peppy voice. The boy nodded back in response only to have stopped crying as he found a bit of comfort in Jisoo.
"Alright, all you have to do is look away for me and stick out your arm. Then we can get you that lollipop. Ok?" Jisoo explained as she tried to be as simple as possible to not trigger another fit from the boy. From there Jisoo was cleaning the area with some alcohol wipes. She could see the boy starting to panic.
"Here hold my hand, if it hurts too much I want you to squeeze it," Jisoo said as she offered her hand out to the little boy. He grabbed it and turned his head away to avoid looking at the needle.
As soon as he looked away Jisoo administered the shot to the boy as he was already distracted. The key was to give them instructions and once they do it, she can administer the shot. Usually, a kid's attention span isn't very strong. Much to his mother's demise, he didn't cry. He didn't kick her, yell, or throw a fit at all. It was truly some magical work that Jisoo had done.
"And boom! All done. You were so brave there Jiwoo. I'm very proud of you!" Jisoo said giving a smile to the boy.
"That's all? It didn't hurt." The boy said completely dumbfounded as he expected pain.
"That's all. No pain, just magic." Jisoo said making the mom laugh in the background.
"Woah you're a magician?" The boy asks as he was filled with wonder about Jisoo.
"Not just any magician, the nurse magician. Pretty cool right?" Jisoo played along as she found it humorous to see the little boy be so filled with wonders on just how his shot didn't hurt.
"Mommy, can we get this nurse again? I like her." The boy asked as he turned to his mom making Jisoo a little flustered.
"Of course baby. You did great there. I'm very proud." His mother said as the boy went to his mom's side.
"Well here is your lollipop Jiwoo. You guys can check out at the front desk and Irene can help you out with your payment." Jisoo explained as she gave Jiwoo the lollipop she promised.
"Nurse Jisoo. Thank you. I sincerely mean this, no nurse has been able to handle my son the way you handled Jiwoo. And that's coming from his mother." The mom laughed as she praised Jisoo.
"Of course ma'am. I have a way with kids like him. They are not so easy to handle with but sometimes I can work my magic." Jisoo said as she gave a smile.
