Trigger Warning: Death

The terrifying screeches from another dimension flooded my senses, but my head seemed to stop registering them when I noticed Dream limping his way even closer to me.

We were hidden underground. Surely the monsters would find us soon.

He winced, holding his sides. Nervously I glanced down, fearing the worse. And just like all the other nightmares in this land, it was worse than I expected.

His blood soaked through his clothes, his mask dangling on the side of his face. His almost completely limp body draped over my arms, he managed a weak smile and tried to calm me down as I took him into my lap.

"It'll be okay, George," he said, wincing as he reached to put a hand on the side of my face.

"No! No you can't go!" I screamed, pulling him as close to my chest as I could.

"You'll be alright without me," his pained grin accompanying his words as he tried to convince me.

"You can't..." I said, choking on my own sobs.

"I love you, George," he said, his panicked and yet sickeningly calm words becoming muffled with blood.

"I love you, Dream! You can't leave me! You can't!" I screamed, feeling my pants begin to seep in the red liquid.

"I love you... George," he said, beginning to close his eyes.

"NO!" I screamed again, smashing my lips against his in an effort to show him what I felt for him before he was gone.

He mustered any energy left to kiss back with passion, our tears and blood mixing as our faces met. The metallic salty taste of blood, sweat, and tears was all I could taste. The kiss spoke a thousand words in none, and it felt like every emotion possible was being directed through our lips. Every thought about each other, every experience, every feeling for each other, communicated through one kiss that spent sparks through my body at a million miles per hour. The distant crash of another beast from above us echoed through the ground, but it was still like we were the only ones left in the entire universe at that moment.

His arm dropped from my cheek and his lips stopped moving. Frightened, I pulled away to look down at him.

His tired eyes closed, and his chest failed to rise with his breathing. I soothingly played with his hair in an attempt to hopefully comfort him in his passing. I cried harder, my own blood trickling down my mouth. He was all I had.

I calmly brushed his fluffy blond hair with my hand, the peaks wet with blood. I knew that by now he was gone, but I tried to focus on the memories we had together and the wonderful times we shared rather than his all-too-cold body enveloped in my arms and the hatred boiling in my veins for the creatures surrounding us.

I picked up Dream's famous nephrite sword, now smeared and stained with his blood to match the dried blood of those before him, perishing to his hand. I gently set him down, and before returning to face our greatest foes one last time, left a single ever-lasting kiss on his forehead.

I woke up, my shirt drenched in sweat. Sunlight through the window practically blinded me. I climbed out of the car and on the side of the road, tears leftover from my dream still streaking my face. I pressed my hands hard against the hot cement of the road, trying to ground myself. It was only a dream.

I slowly stood up to grab my phone, but to my dismay, I had left it at my house last night. I climbed back into my car. There was no way of telling what time it was. All I knew was that the sun had to have been up for a few hours, judging by how bright it was.
