A Bad Start

I had always been the friend. The friend of that super hot chick. The friend of the cheerleader. The friend of anyone. I was at the lowest of the populars and highest of the losers, which was a perfect place to be and drama didn’t follow me much. Except that all of my friends were gazed upon with lust, while I awkwardly stood beside them.

Don’t get me wrong, having hot friends had some plus sides too. Like I was taught how to do my makeup perfectly, and different ways to style my hair. I got to hang out with some pretty hot guys, and my parents thought I was doing pretty well socially in school.

But that didn’t hide the fact I was the ugly duckling who never got any action unless it was out of pity.

I was okay with that until sophomore year of high school started. I had no idea how this year was going to plan out, and to be honest, I wasn’t looking forward to it.

“HARRRRPPPEERRRRRRR!!” I whirled around at my locker on the first day of school, finding Cassidy panting and sweating.

“Why are you yelling my name?”

“Guess what…Brett just…asked…me,” Cass tried to respond, but couldn’t do a very good job because of how out of breath she was.

“Why you’re out of breath just from running to my locker?” I joke.

“Ha. Funny. But no. He just asked me to homecoming this year! Can you believe it! One of the hottest guys, not just in this school, but in the country asked me to go to the dance with him. Catch me before I fall,” she fake swooned.

“Whoa, Brett already asked you to homecoming? That’s not for another 2 months!” Asking someone to the dance this early can only mean one thing. “Oh my gosh, he wants to date you!”

“I know that’s what I was thinking. Do you really think he does? I mean I thought he was going after Mary but I guess not. Oh goodness I wonder what color I should wear. Do you think he’ll remember a corsage? I don’t know what boutonniere I should get him…”

“Calm down! You have 2 months to think about this. School just started and I’m going to be late for Chemistry if you don’t let me go.” I interrupted Cass.

“Okay bye! See you at lunch!” Cass literally skipped off. Truth be told, I didn’t give two shits if I was late for chemistry because I knew my new teacher would be half asleep anyway. I really just wanted to get away from her because I didn’t know how much longer I could bare her telling me about how wonderful her life is. I’m almost positive I will end up going to the dance with someone who is ‘taking one for the team’ in my group and doesn’t really have any interest in me. All through chemistry I kept thinking about how beautiful Cassidy will look and how ugly I will look. Finally the bell rings for homeroom.

Over by my locker, Cass, Min, and Naomi were huddled together. “What’s up guys?”

They spread out a bit so I could join the group.

“Naomi was just telling us about how she lost her virginity in her beach house this summer. Continue on,” Wait. What did Cass just say? Naomi lost her V Card?

“Well, my parents were out at a party that night, so my surfing instructor decided to come over, and…I think you can guess the rest.” A smug look came across Naomi’s face. Wow. I wasn’t so surprised that one of my friend’s lost their virginity, a most others did last year, but I was surprised that Naomi did. She was the friend who I thought I could relate to the most. She wasn’t completely stunning, she’d only had a few boyfriends, and her weight wasn’t perfect.

“There wasn’t even any blood. Plus, he left me flowers the morning before we came back. How romantic!” Naomi continued talking about her hook up while I left to go to the bathroom. Not only did Cassidy have a supremely hot date already, but Naomi was now not a virgin, leaving me to be the only one who still had their virginity.

Fudgemuffins. Not even half way done with the first day of school and I already felt like crap. At lunch, everyone was still talking about their new classes and all the cute new boys. Then, Brett came over and brought 2 of his friends with him.

“Hey Brett!” Cass chirped. She scooted me over to make room for them.

“Oh you don’t have to move. I was just coming over here to invite all of you guys to our back to school party. It’s this Friday cuz Steven’s parents are gone.”

“Oh, I would…I mean we would love to! Right?” We all just kinda stared at Cassidy.

“Oh um, can’t wait to see you guys then. Later.” The guys walked away as all of us girls turned to stare at Cass.

“What were you thinking? Everybody knows people only go to Steven’s parties if they wanna hook up or have absolutely nothing else to do. The parties suck. And I thought we were going to go see that new scary movie anyway!” Min ranted.

I agreed with her. I was looking forward to being with all my friends after not seeing them this summer, but a party wasn’t exactly what I wanted to do.

“Listen, why can’t we just go to his party and go see the movie next week? And his parties aren’t that bad. We could make them fun.” Everyone just stared at Cass again.

The bell rang and I got up to go to P.E.  First day back meant that P.E. would probably just include all of the students sitting in the bleachers bored to death. Now I wish that was how it had been.

I walked into the gym. “Hiya kids! I’m the new gym coach, Mrs. Davis. You guys are my 3rd class today, and so far I haven’t been getting energy out of any of the other classes. I expect more from you.”

I thought to myself, who the hell was this? I was ordered into a line and a uniform was thrusted upon me. After we all changed, Coach Davis had us running in circles the whole hour. By the end, I was very close to fainting. I wasn’t expecting any of this.

By the end of the day, I confirmed this year would probably suck ass. I was actually right for once.
