Grace pulled on the corset, tightening it. Evelina gasped at it's tightness, but then relaxed.
"Is that alright Miss?" Grace asked.
"Yes, it's perfect."
Evelina looked at her new dress, the one she would be wearing to the ball. The dress was a mint green color with white lace. It was quite big but Evelina didn't mind, it was beautiful. Her hair was put into an elaborate braided hairstyle on top of her head (her hair was much longer now in the new world). She twirled around once, smiling to herself. But then a different thought filled her head. Axel. She would never get a chance to say goodbye to him. She looked over at the end table, sitting on top of it was the golden key.
"Miss, what do you use that key for?" Grace asked, tightening the dress.
"Oh, it's just a piece of jewelry," Evelina lied.
"Yes but is it very special? You never seem to let it out of your sight." Grace noted.
Evelina bit her lip. She didn't want to tell Grace the truth, but she also felt bad lying. Evelina had never liked lying to people, she felt dirty when she did.
"It doesn't really matter, does it?" Evelina said, trying her hardest not to seem rude.
"No, it doesn't." Grace conceded. She placed a new necklace around Evelina and let her look in the mirror one more time. The two smiled and Evelina left her room.
I do wish this dress was lighter Evelina thought to herself. She didn't like being weighed down by the dress, or having the wideness of it prevent her from getting close to people. She preferred her usual dresses, long and flowy, perfect for running in. Her shoes tapped against the floor, but the sound began to fade out as she got closer to the ballroom.
Sam came up behind her, placing his hands on her shoulders.
"You look troubled, love." he said sweetly.
Evelina melted into him, letting his arms fall to her waist, "everything is delightful, I'm just a little nervous." she replied calmly.
Sam kissed her cheek and took her hand, "you don't have to worry, love, I'm right here."
She gave him a small smile, and the pair walked through the doors.
The lights were bright and overwhelming to say the least, but Evelina quickly adjusted. She had been to multiple royal events, only, none had been for her and Samual. Sam took control, talking to other people who were congratulating them on their engagement. Evelina just smiled to everyone, not entirely sure what to say.
They held a wonderful dinner and had a dance together before Sam was able to get Evelina a break. They walked out into the garden hand in hand and stared up at the moon and glowing stars.
"Please tell me, what is troubling you," Sam persisted.
Evelina sighed, she needed to be honest. "Sam, I need to tell you where I actually go."
Same waited patiently, his expression not changing. "I'm actually a girl from another world. I have a door in my basement that lets me come here to be with you," she carefully explained, "and I want to be with you always, which is why now that we are engaged, I will never leave. But I have a friend who I never got to say goodbye to."
Sam stayed quiet for a few moments, then looked her in the eye, "so, magic is real," he concluded.
It felt like a weight had been lifted off Evelina's shoulders, "yes, it is." she smiled.
Sam stood up, and held out his hand. She took it and they started walking, "I would like to see this other world, if that's possible. You can say goodbye to your friend while we are there."
Evelina grinned, "of course! You would love it there!"
She kissed his cheek and skipped to her room, grabbing the key.
