Chapter Three

Call me wimpy but I did NOT like this school. It was a school version of sorority. I have never liked those colleges. In movies you get the gist that either they filled are with hard-core cliques or gossip mongers. And this school happened to be both. There were jocks, geeks, hippies, goths and a random clique of people who did nothing but dress up. Like seriously, I didn’t even know a place like this existed. My worst nightmare seemed to come true.

Amber, breathe.

Who-so-ever invented this breathing exercise should know that it doesn’t work on hyperactive people  like me. Not at all, actually.

“And I was just like hello, that wallet is so mine. I can’t believe I let that Prada slip out of my hands. And then daddy had to call-“ I tuned Rebecca’s annoying voice out. Like seriously, someone tell me how many cheerleaders are there at this school?

I turned Gaga on and left the rest of the world behind as I went into la la land of music. ‘Born this way’ was playing and I nodded my head to the rhythm as we walked towards Sarah’s car. When we reached my mean cousin’s car I realised that it was pretty basic actually. A red Beetle. You got to give her credit for the fact that this girl managed to get into coolest of the cool cliques (that’s what people say, at least) without having buck loads. By the way would somebody please explain me why these heiresses were at a PUBLIC school? Det. Amber Roy shall find out…eh, not today! Had enough squeaky talk.

I was disturbed from my dreamland by my oh-so-affectionate cousin. She was mentally shooting daggers at me. What was wrong with her? She hated me, didn’t she?

“What?” I asked, annoyed. One tip folks, don’t mess with me when I listened to my music. I might just do something we both will end up regretting. And by that I mean…that it won’t be pretty.

“Get in” she commanded. Seriously, would it kill her to be nicer. I looked at the open car door in front of me. Hell no! I can’t tolerate 20 minutes, alone, with mean-cousin and squeaky-brat.

I still got in without a word since Sarah was my only ride home. Only if I had been a people person I would have made a friend or two and easily avoided this death situation.

“Wait up” I heard a voice and was surprised to be confronted by the one and only smart cheerleader in town. Julie, Julia, whatever.

“Hey” squeaky brat said in her squeaky voice.

“Whatcha want James?” Sarah asked. She obviously didn’t have a liking for nice people like me and smart-cheerleader. Plus point to be noted, Sarah actually behaved like a typical jock sometimes. Seriously sista, calling someone by the last name, huh? Original. As if.

“I can give Amber a ride home?” she said it more like a question than a statement. But wait a second. Smart cheerleader wanted to give me, ‘me’ a ride home? Damn you girl for building up more suspense for me to unravel. I already had depresses dude, a.k.a., Troy on my mind and now you? Oh my god…she was a part of a gang and wanted to kill me. Or maybe she wanted to hijack Sarah’s car and was distracting her for the moment. In that case, ain’t it too extreme! What the hell, when do I care so much about Sarah? My vote: all for your mission. The mission of making this place a better one to live in. A safer, healthier environment.

“Sure thing” I got out of the car at once, grabbing the opportunity with both hands. I could continue my investigation some other time, right now I just wanted to get away from the two nut jobs.

Sarah looked between smart cheerleader and I blatantly. She seemed to think over the situation when I piped up.

“I won’t tell mom, okay? I’ll tell her you dropped me off.”

I sat down in smart cheerleader’s Mercedes. When I suggested what I did to Sarah she didn’t think for even a moment before kicking me out of the car her and driving off. Wow, that girl really did hold a grudge against me. Add that to the list of mysteries I had to solve. Phew! I had some serious work to do.

When smart cheerleader got into the driver’s side I didn’t give her a moment to blink before bombarding her with questions. Hey, a girl here is dying of curiosity. Cut her some slack. If you didn’t already notice, I’m the girl.

“Julie, why did you agree to giving me a ride. You hardly know me.”

She gave me the look that stated common-sense-is-not-that-common-eh?

“You, dear, should have seen your face. You know you seemed-“

“Seriously annoyed, pissed, irritated. Did you her whatshername Rebecca’s voice. Like oh-my-god, that girl should spend more on her vocal chords and less on her nose. And uh, I can’t believe I’m related to Sarah. We got the same blood in our arteries, veins, whatever, like oh-god what were you thinking. This is no fair. I mean why do I have to get stuck with-“

“Breathe, Amber.” I was interrupted by smart cheerleader who at the present moment was staring at me with an amusement-filled gaze. Embarrassment flooded my face but in my defence, I had to vent my constructed feelings out.

“Jeez…sorry.” I said after a moment or two.

“It’s all cool. Rebecca and Sarah have that effect on people.”

“You mean they’re this irritating all the time?”

She nodded her head.

“Now would give your anger a break and fancy telling me where you live.” It was then I noticed smart cheerleader had a brit accent.

I told her the address and gradually started relaxing. Katy Perry’s ‘Part of me’ was going on on the radio and I was enjoying the song though some questions still made me feel uneasy.

I did not even realise smart cheerleader’s change of mood. I only did when she tuned the music off.

“Hey!” I shouted. Remember what I told you about not fiddling with my music.

“C’mon. Something is bothering you.” She asked me and damn, her voice was pacifying that all my rage went down the drain.

I obviously didn’t want to tell her the truth so thanks to my fast thinking, I went with the safer option.

“I was just wondering as to why you go to a public school. You’re obviously loaded.” I emphasised the car.

“Okay…so obviously this is not what’s bothering you but anyway my dad wants me to be down-to-earth and stuff. Plus I got this baby on my 16th birthday. It had to be something special, right?”

“What about Rebecca?” I was desperate to change the topic now that I knew that she could read my mind.

“She’s my sister.” WHAT?! Thank god I wasn’t drinking or eating something at the moment because well… “Weird? I know.” She continued, noticing my shock.

“Amber…” she trailed off when I didn’t speak. She knew that something was wrong and damn her for being so freaking smart.

“Fine!” I sighed, “It’s about Troy.”

As if on cue I noticed a guy walking towards the riverside, I think, through my window.

“I don’t know.” She said, “Why don’t you go and ask him?”

The guy just happened to look a lot like the one I’d confronted today morning.
